Fall Recreation Report

Greetings from the Seeley Lake Ranger District (SLRD). As the temperatures drop and the larch begin to change, so does use on the National Forest. Here is a quick update of current happenings around the district.

• A limited number of seasonal gate closures went in to effect on Oct. 15. These closures occur on an annual basis and are in accordance with the Lolo National Forest (LNF) Travel Management Plan. Travel management maps are available free of charge at the District office that outline all closure dates and locations.

• Seeley Lake Campground and Riverpoint Campground have closed for the season and will re-open next Memorial Day weekend. The Riverpoint Day Use Area will remain open, along with all other campgrounds, dispersed campsites and day use areas on the district. Restroom facilities will remain open. However, potable water and garbage service have been halted for the winter. Campers will need to provide their own drinking water and be prepared to pack out all trash.

• The Seeley Lake Ranger District is participating in the National Visitor Use Monitoring program from Oct. 1, 2015 – Sept. 30, 2016. SLRD staff will be out and about through the year conducting visitor use surveys and collecting data to assess use levels, user types, user satisfaction levels and various other factors. This information plays a crucial role in allowing the LNF to understand if it is appropriately meeting visitors’ needs. Please take the time to participate if you encounter a surveyor in the field. Surveys typically take about 10 minutes and are great opportunity to provide feedback.

• General rifle season began Oct. 24 and is often a busy time on the National Forest. The SLRD welcomes hunters on LNF lands but would like to remind folks that it is every individual’s responsibility to be aware of local regulations as well as ownership. The Seeley Lake area has seen significant transfers of ownership in recent years. Updated maps with current ownership are available at the SLRD office.

• Firewood permits are available at the SLRD office. Rules and regulations concerning woodcutting are detailed on the back of the permit. Please remember to remove debris from road corridors and drainage ditches when you are done cutting.

Now get on out and enjoy your National Forest.
