Montana's general big game hunting season closed Sunday, Nov. 25. Montana Fish, Wildfire & Parks reported deer and elk harvest totals were down in northwest Montana while hunter check stations in west-central Montana remained similar to recent years. The five regional check stations in northwest Montana, tallied a combined total of 950 white-tailed deer, including 676 bucks, this season. SEELEY LAKE - The community voted two-to-one to replace three of five Sewer Board members. Two of the new members quit out of frustration, leaving the other neutralized. Each year Seeley Lake Lions Club distributes Holiday Food Baskets to area families in need of help, providing a holiday meal for Christmas. Ladybugs are not 'bugs' but actually beetles in the order Coleoptera and swarm on or around mountain peaks. Common species in the Blackfoot Watershed include the convergent lady beetle, Hippodamia convergens. This lady beetle gathering can be a regular occurrence. SEELEY LAKE – The Seeley Lake Fire Board discussed continued improvements for the department at their regular board meeting Nov. 20. Fire Chief Dave Lane also told the board about a large donation of surplus equipment that they received from the Bozeman Fire Department. Lane reported that the Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) upgrade for the department is 98 percent complete. SEELEY LAKE – The Seeley Lake Elementary School Board was given a proposal to assume ownership of the Seeley Lake Farmers’ and Crafters’ Market at its Nov. 20 board meeting. The board is also working on policy changes and was informed that the school’s Park Committee was successful in obtaining a maintenance grant. Vicki Voegelin presented a proposal for the school to assume ownership of the Farmers Market as a way to raise funds. SEELEY LAKE – The Seeley-Swan High School Leo's Club has been busy serving the community this holiday season and hope to pay forward the kindness Seeley Lake received during the Rice Ridge fire. The Leos held a turkey drive to support the Seeley-Swan Community Food Bank again this year on Nov. 16. They collected donations and turkeys at Cory's Valley Market and Rovero's. SEELEY LAKE – On Nov. 13 Joan Haueter passed away in her Seeley Lake home. She was born in Tennessee on July 7, 1932. Joan is survived by husband Jim, daughter Libby, son-in-law Perry and grandsons Nate and Sam. Jim and Joan were married in Minnesota and lived there 35 years before moving to Seeley Lake in 1997. Joan devoted her life to her family and helping others through child care, leadership in youth groups and political organizing. She enjoyed cooking, sewing and playing word games.
