  • Bridge or bust: Boy Scout bridge out until 2027

    Griffen Smith, of the Pathfinder|Nov 23, 2023

Griffen Smith of the Pathfinder Several bridges in Seeley Lake, Greenough and Condon are in need of major repairs or replacements, but work on the bridges likely won't start until 2027 because of a lack of funding. That means the Boy Scout bridge, which was shuttered by the Montana Department of Transportation for structural concerns on Nov. 15, will likely sit idle until Missoula County secures state or federal dollars to replace it. Missoula County Public Work Director Shane Stack told the...

Miller gave a review of the nitrate contamination in Seeley Lake, how it works with septic systems and next steps the Missoula County Health Department can take to fix the issue at han...

  • Seeley Lake Elementary gets grant to continue out-of-classroom learning

    Griffen Smith, of the Pathfinder|Nov 23, 2023

Seeley Lake Elementary School will keep its technology, outdoor education, tutoring and other extracurricular activities after the school announced it received another five-year, competitive federal grant. The school won the Nita M. Lowery 21st Century Community Learning Center Grant, valued at $150,000 annually. Bridget Laird, a high school English teacher and former SLE teacher, wrote the application for the grant, which she also received for eight years beginning in 2015. While funding from the first grant ran out at the end of 2022, SLE was...

  • Time for turkey! Veterans bring meals

    Griffen Smith, of the Pathfinder|Nov 23, 2023

Scott Porter carries a tub of onions into the Seeley Lake Food Pantry on Nov. 16. Enough food to feed 60 families flowed into the Clearwater Valley from the Northwest Montana Veterans Stand Down and Food Pantry. The pantry has worked out of the Evergreen area in the Flathead Valley for the last 25 years. The group recently decided to outreach to the Seeley Lake area after it received an excess of food this fall. "We plan to keep working with the food bank in Seeley Lake and building that...

  • Let's Carry Our Recent Public Lands Lessons Forward

    Christopher Moore, Ferndale, Montana|Nov 23, 2023

Residents of the Flathead Valley have recently been witnesses to what can happen in public lands management when the public isn’t adequately consulted before decisions move forward. I’m referring to the permitting issues for Holland Lake Lodge. I think (and hope!) what has happened there will provide lessons that both federal agency employees and our elected officials learn from. I’d like to bring it to Senator Daines’ attention, as I see him moving a piece of public lands legislation forward in the U.S. Senate currently without first investing...

  • New Federal regs threaten Montana's rural banks

Rep. Steve Gunderson and Rep. Ron Marshall|Nov 23, 2023

In the quiet corners of rural Montana, credit unions and community banks offer a unique ability to focus on bringing value to Main Street rather than Wall Street. These institutions have a vested interest in the success of their communities and often serve as economic anchors, supporting local businesses, farms, and ranches. Local banks offer a unique ability to build personal relationships and offer services dedicated to fit the specific needs of a rural community. However, their ability to do just that would be at risk if federal legislation...

  • Preparing Patients for Changes in Dental Care

Dr. Alyssa Harris, Partnership Health Center, Seeley Swan Medical Center|Nov 23, 2023

New medical research continually changes and adjusts the way physicians practice medicine and treat patients. Dentistry is no different. Evidence-based recommendations in dentistry are based on high-quality studies that undergo rigorous review. As new research emerges, changes to patient care must be made to align our practice with the science and ensure we are providing the highest-quality care possible. When patients are accustomed to a certain experience at the dentist, a change to that experience can sometimes, understandably, cause...

  • Our shared power in Christ

    Rev. Carrie A. H. Benton, Mountain Lakes Presbyterian Church|Nov 23, 2023

One of the primary struggles for the church today is an ancient struggle. This struggle is about power, specifically, confusion about divine power. Divine power as displayed in the life and ministry of Jesus is about power with others, power for others. It has a communal focus, a shared-life-together focus. The purposes of divine power are to create, to transform, and to liberate. This divine power is most evident in the person and work of Christ. The person and work of Christ is concerned with abundant life for all. Christ’s power, divine p...

    Griffen Smith of the Pathfinder|Nov 23, 2023

The Seeley Swan Hospital District Board discussed adding a new vaccine freezer, agreed to keep a safety deposit box at the bank and addressed other wear and tear at the Medical Center during its Nov. 14 meeting. While the board is still investigating whether a new A/C unit is necessary for the medical center, board member Martin DeHaven said the water damage in the ceiling from early this year was fixed. A second project focused on spiders found in the building. Any concerns of bugs or mold in the area have been put to rest, he said. There are...

The Montana Grizzlies never looked back last Saturday, Nov. 18, beating Montana State University in a 37-7 romp that gave the Griz its first Big Sky Conference Title in 14 years. Montana started the game on fire with two rushing touchdowns in the first quarter by freshman running back Eli Gillman and senior quarterback Clifton McDowell. The Cats were hampered by the noise of Washington-Grizzly Stadium. A record-breaking 27,178 people watched the game in person. Hundreds more tailgated right...

  • A fly fisher's thanksgiving

Chuck Stranahan, The Fly Fishing Journal|Nov 23, 2023

Once again we'll be going to my friend Jim's place for Thanksgiving. Among other things, our camaraderie is rooted in flyfishing. And as is so often true of flyfishers, our commonality extends to other things, other areas of interest, other affinities. The usual crowd consists of three or four couples of empty nesters, depending on who will travel out-of-state to visit the children, or which kids will make the trek home this year. It just sort of happened, over time, that this tradition...
