  • Neighbors Helping Neighbors

    Andi Bourne, Pathfinder|Nov 23, 2017

FRIENDSWOOD, TEXAS – With the Rice Ridge Fire bearing down on Seeley Lake and no moisture in sight, Houston, Texas was hit with Hurricane Harvey, flooding 350,000 homes and dumping 53 inches of rain in three days in late August. After weathering 11 tropical storms in his lifetime, part-time Seeley Lake resident Conrad Jones never expected he would be the one needing help with number 12. Hurricane Harvey forced he, his wife Leslie and son Jack to evacuate their primary residence in Friendswood, T...

SEELEY LAKE – The Seeley Lake Leos Club collected 10 turkeys and more than $750 for the Seeley-Swan Community Food Bank during their Turkey Drive Nov. 17. The event was a huge success. • Vote Like You're Signing a Contract

    Frank Dufresne, Seeley Lake, Mont.|Nov 23, 2017

SEELEY LAKE - From up and down the valley, folks tell us about the value and virtue of ‘clean water’ and the chemistry of sewage. We’ve funded studies and drilled wells to show what we already knew: Sewage affects water quality and should be regulated. The proposed sewer is a device that will allow folks to improve or profit on property investments and at the same time comply with Missoula County’s restrictive septic regulations. The debate is about cost and methods, not if we want clean water or not. Will this method have best results for mon...

  • Questions and Answers about Sewer Protest Letter

    Don Larson, Seeley Lake, Mont.|Nov 23, 2017

SEELEY LAKE - The Sewer Board letter of Nov. 16 stating its intention to incur debt for a sewer project was incorrectly labeled a “ballot” in my last weeks/letter to the editor. Ballots may not be forwarded to “snow birds” but this letter is not considered a ballot and may be forwarded. I apologize for any confusion this may have created. Now...as to the letter: It, too, is confusing and obscure. We all basically received a form letter which says we can protest. If you received three letters, it means you have three properties in the sewer d...

  • Goodbye, Old Friend

    Heather Layman|Nov 23, 2017

For Grandpa and Teton. May they be riding down those trails together again... It's been time for a while now...to say goodbye. And I knew you knew that when I walked out in the corral the other day on that cold and frosty morning. The time had come to let go. And I could hear Grandpa saying the same. The goosebumps came, the hair stood up on my neck and the tears welled on my icy eyelashes while I slipped the halter on and walked you to the trailer... It's funny how one, single moment can cause...

  • The Shut-Ins

    Dale Terrillion, Montana Christian Logger|Nov 23, 2017

It was somewhere between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Mother was preparing for her yearly pilgrimage. The old hand grinder was clamped to the table with care and calling out the back door Mother knew I’d soon be there. She had all the dates and fruit and whatever she put in her famous fruitcake waiting for me to crank away. None of those big lumps in Mom’s fruitcake, no-sir-ree. I knew better then argue with my elders so I “debated.” And so I explained to her that I needed to finish the snowshoes I was working on, the trapline was ready to be l...

  • Homestead Act Launches New Era

    Derek Strahn|Nov 23, 2017

The future seemed especially promising – so much so, in fact, that most Montana homesteaders readily heeded the calls by government officials and bankers to "do their patriotic duty" and reinvest their profits in more land and machinery. "Food will Win the War!" the era's propaganda posters proclaimed, and with readily available credit, Montana's homesteaders mortgaged virtually everything in hopes of cashing in on the soaring economy. By Armistice Day in 1918, the state's population had c...
