  • Relationships key to healing from trauma

    Andi Bourne, Pathfinder|Nov 15, 2018

SEELEY LAKE – Traumatic events like the Rice Ridge fire affect everyone differently. According to licensed, clinical social worker Stacy York, a person's response and feelings are what make it traumatic. "The way that we heal is through relationship. That is the only way," said York during her presentation on how trauma affects children, Nov. 15 at Seeley Lake Elementary. "If we are not in relationship, we can't heal." York's presentation intertwined her personal stories and audience q...

  • Timber salvage pales in scope to area burned

    Andi Bourne, Pathfinder|Nov 15, 2018

SEELEY LAKE – Just one year after Montana's record-breaking 2017 fire season, the majority of the timber salvage sales in the region have been bid. Although one of the purposes for the US Forest Service salvage projects was to recover the economic value of forest products, design criteria and resource protections limited the scope of salvage opportunities. As megafires continue to take out suitable timber volume as a viable operation into the future, Pyramid Mountain Lumber, Inc. said the s...

  • Customers vote with their wallets

    Doug Anderson, Seeley Lake, Mont.|Nov 15, 2018

SEELEY LAKE - I am so glad that the main street businesses in Seeley Lake are booming. Profits are so high that business owners can afford to alienate huge percentages of their customers by endorsing one political candidate over another and supporting controversial ballot initiatives with signs at the entrances, parking lots and even at the cash register. Why, business is so good, that petitions calling for the removal of specific public employees, for acts of God unrelated to their work, is totally acceptable. My management degree was only a m...

  • Need to pull our head out of the sand and respond

    Roxie Sterling, Seeley Lake, Mont.|Nov 15, 2018

If the United States of America was being attacked by air or by sea, we and our military would immediately respond to protect our sovereign nation. Our military needs to also respond to the invasion of the caravans coming by land to our border. We know they are not coming to embrace our constitution, our rule of law or to honor our flag. They are coming, burning our flag and bringing their flag to plant on American soil as conquerors. They are trying to deceive us by bringing some women and children, appealing to our generosity and our compassi...

  • Vote shows rural/urban divide

    Nathan Bourne, Pathfinder|Nov 15, 2018

The political divide between the rural and urban parts of Missoula County could be seen in the election results of several countywide and statewide races this year. Two countywide races in particular saw such high support from urban voters that it would be numerically impossible for rural voters to have changed the outcome. The county has 52 precincts. There are 33 urban precincts within Missoula City's limits and the remaining 19 are outside the city. In the Missoula County Sheriff/Coroner...

  • Joy in the snow?

Leon Kauffman, Elder, Condon Community Church|Nov 15, 2018

I recently ran across a quote on Facebook attributed to @mindfulfitness that said “If you choose not to find joy in the snow, you will have less joy in your life but still the same amount of snow.” I suspect that for most people who choose to live in this part of the world, they can at least find some joy in the snow whether it be in recreational opportunities such as skiing or snowmobiling, in work opportunities clearing snow, or just in the beauty it adds to an already beautiful place. On the other side of it, I think there are aspects of...
