    Nathan Bourne, Pathfinder|Nov 3, 2016

SEELEY LAKE - The Seeley-Swan Lady Blackhawks brought down the undefeated Valley Christian Eagles for the District 13-C Championship in Seeley Lake Oct. 29. The feat was easier said than done, as the Lady Blackhawks had to beat the Eagles twice in the double elimination tournament. Both teams had a bye in the first round and defeated their opponents in three games each in the second round. The Lady Blackhawks defeated Clark Fork and Valley Christian defeated Darby. The Lady Blackhawks sent the...

    Andi Bourne, Pathfinder|Nov 3, 2016

SEELEY LAKE – Having little restaurant experience, Tim and Connie Clark purchased Pop's Place in 1991. After 25 years, they said the best thing about the business has been the relationships they have developed with the residents of Seeley Lake and all the friends they have made along the way. The community is invited to join the Clarks for a 25-year Open House Friday, Nov. 4 from 2-4 p.m. They will be serving hamburgers and cheeseburgers all day for buy one, get one for $0.25. • VOTE NO on I-177 for the Sake of Balanced, Science-Driven Wildlife Management

    Dave Allen, Missoula, Mont.|Nov 3, 2016

Plain and simple, I-177 would have far-reaching, damaging impacts on public safety, taxpayers and wildlife. The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation stands opposed to I-177. Trapping is a key tool used by wildlife managers as a science-based management technique to maintain healthy wildlife populations and habitat. I-177 bans one of the safest and most cost-effective methods for controlling populations of skunks, muskrats, coyotes, raccoons, beaver, wolves, foxes and similar species. We live in a time where simply allowing Mother Nature to take care...

  • Marx-Energy for HD 92

    Tim Furey - MT Legislator 2007-2012, Missoula, Mont.|Nov 3, 2016

As a past legislator for Northeastern Missoula County I have been extremely impressed with Addrien Marx and her energy, enthusiasm, dedication and genuine concern for the people of Montana. Marx has a history of community involvement and service. She is seen at meetings, workshops and events. HD 92 includes the Clark Fork, Blackfoot, Clearwater and Swan Rivers!!! It includes the Bob Marshall Wilderness and 1,000’s of acres of National and State Forest lands. Marx has been an active proponent in making sure the citizens of Missoula County and a...

  • "Family" Trustees Granted Vote in Sewer Election

    Don Larson, Seeley Lake,Mont.|Nov 3, 2016

SEELEY LAKE - Seeley Lake Sewer District property owners who hold their properties in family trusts will be able to vote Nov. 23 on the bond issue. That’s a reversal. The Elections Office notified those owners a few weeks ago they would be ineligible to vote if their properties were incorporated. The Missoula County Attorney’s office took a closer look at the law and has decided “family” trustees will be allowed to vote. If you are a trustee in such a property, you should contact Bradley Seaman at the Missoula County Elections office, 406-258...

  • The Solution to Poor Water Quality in Seeley Lake is Community Sewer System

    Jim Erven - Missoula City-County Health Department, Missoula, Mont.|Nov 3, 2016

SEELEY LAKE - The community of Seeley Lake has a water quality problem. The problem is that the local groundwater has elevated levels of nitrate. The main source of the nitrate is septic systems located in Seeley Lake. Septic systems do a great job removing bacteria and viruses from wastewater but do not remove much nitrate from wastewater. As a result, septic systems contribute nitrate to groundwater. Because of the high density of septic systems located in the town of Seeley Lake, nitrate levels are high. Elevated nitrate levels in ground...

  • Council Misrepresents Community

    Bruce Friede, Seeley Lake,Mont.|Nov 3, 2016

SEELEY LAKE - I read the minutes of the Transportation Commissioners meeting for May 26, 2016 on the Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) website. If you want to read them yourself, https://www.mdt.mt.gov/pubinvolve/trans_comm/meetings.shtml I read that in three years there has only been 45 traffic stops, 67 citations and only eight of those were for speed, within this community study area. The Community Council read the MDT Traffic Study and did not like it so they did their own. The results they published were that they had 330...

  • Two Important Votes For Local Citizens

    Nov 3, 2016

I support Addrien Marx for our representative in our state legislature. I’ve known Addrien for nearly 25 years. She and I don’t necessarily agree on all things political but her open-minded approach to our discussions has always impressed me. She is more of a centrist than I but that’s exactly what we need in that seat. We have more than enough outliers on both the right and the left already – let’s fill in the middle with some clear thinking by voting for Addrien. I encourage you all to consider that when you walk into the voting booth. Th...

  • Vote NO for Seeley Lake Sewer

Don and Sandi Doucett, Seeley Lake, Mont.|Nov 3, 2016

SEELEY LAKE - We have been long time Seeley Lake residents (70 years) and have supported all community projects through these years. However, the Sewer Projects is one we must vote NO on! Our population is too small to incur this kind of a debt. We have not even seen a breakout of the costs for this project. There will be significant impact to our low-income residents and those on fixed incomes. Before we saddle ourselves with a huge debt, has every alternative been explored to upgrade existing septic systems? Pumping the sewage two miles...

  • Vote by the Facts

    Addrien Marx - Democratic Candidate for HD92, Seeley Lake, Mont.|Nov 3, 2016

“Negative campaigning is only effective if we as citizens allow it to be.” I agree with my opponent on this, only I personally do not believe that stating facts on how we are different – from sources that withstand legal review – is negative! The truth is not negative. When I go to vote – I want the facts, not the rhetoric. FACT: My opponent is simply a politician that is vying for his third run in his third (and different) district. How does that equate to knowing our challenges, who we are and really taking our interests to Helena? I do not...

  • Local Survey Update on Presidential Nominees

    Ken Kronsperger, Seeley Lake, Mont.|Nov 3, 2016

    1. E-mail Gate: My “Hillary for President” T-shirt showed me that the attitudes toward my Hillary option were greeted with a fair amount of curiosity and suspicion. My friends thought I had lost my bearings, my not so much friends, thought I had finally gained access to what little intelligence I had left ( pun intended). 2. Locker room talk- gate: The attitudes toward my Trump T-shirt expo was without a doubt, more emotional than option number 1. I was accused of less than honorable moral standing (Hitler comparison). I guess no one read wha...

  • Dave Strohmaier: Read His Website

Diann Ericson and Mike Childs, Swan Valley, Mont.|Nov 3, 2016

I am certain many of you feel this way…the candidate you support must reflect your values. Values first, party second. By values, I mean what is the candidate’s position on issues that you believe are important to our county, state and nation. Dave Strohmaier’s extensive experience in natural resources, local and state government, as a public official and in public service, merits my attention immediately. On Dave’s first day in office as a Missoula County Commissioner, he will know dozens of county and state officials and will be able to “hit...

  • SLE Jumps into Multimedia

Sara Stevenson, Seeley Lake Elementary, Grade 7|Nov 3, 2016

SEELEY LAKE – One of the elective choices for fifth to eighth graders at Seeley Lake Elementary (SLE) is Multimedia. Mrs. Michele Holmes, the technology teacher at SLE, formed the class in 2005-6 because her oldest daughter, Ashley Holmes, thought that the school needed a yearbook. Mrs. Holmes has done the elective ever since then and each quarter is a new topic. For first quarter the topic is photography, second is usually videography, third is sale techniques and fourth quarter is making a...

  • Mild Weather Contributes to Modest Start to Hunting Season

    Nov 3, 2016

Mild weather across west-central Montana in the first week of the general big game hunting season did little to move deer and elk. Harvests reported through the Anaconda, Bonner and Darby check stations were modest. Across the three check stations combined, Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) employees and volunteers in Region 2 checked 4,414 hunters in the first two weekends of the hunting season, down slightly from 4,516 checked during this same period last year. FWP checked 120 elk at the check stations in the first two weekends this season...

  • Get It Together, Women

    Heather Layman|Nov 3, 2016

It was recently pointed out to me by a male counterpart (and I am sure a trustworthy source like Hillary's email) that after my last rant about woman logic, women are twelve percent more likely to be violent during road rage. After I talked myself out of taking a swing on the unsuspecting dude, I sorta decided to go ahead and let my calm, cool woman logic prevail...hahahaha. Even I was surprised by how quickly and fluidly the words came in my retort to his ridiculous accusation! And I felt the u...

  • Trail History of Seeley Lake - First Generation Trails

Ron Cox, Seeley Lake Community Council Trail Committee|Nov 3, 2016

SEELEY LAKE - This spot in God’s Country has always been a cross roads of trails. The Ancient Indian trail up the Blackfoot River (known as Cokahlarishkit, as Lewis rendered it, or “the River of the Road to Buffaloe,” better transcribed as Qoq’áax ‘í skit and translated as “buffalo road”) was the “Interstate Highway” serving travelers from today’s Idaho and Bitterroot/Clark Fork valleys. “Business” loops went to various hunting-gathering sites along the way. Here in what is now Seeley Lake, ancient trails went four directions before being “disc...

  • Preserving Primm Meadows

    Sigrid Olson, Pathfinder|Nov 3, 2016

POTOMAC - The Montana Conservation Corps (MCC), together with The Nature Conservancy (TNC), has been working on a restoration project at Primm Meadows, north of Highway 200 up Gold Creek. The project involved thinning of smaller trees and will be logged after the ground freezes with the goal in mind of promoting rapid tree growth in the remaining trees. Originally the homestead of Charles and Mahala Primm, the parklike meadows are not an official campground, however the public is welcome to camp...

Her goal for all her classes is to create an engaging, student-driven classroom where the students lead the curriculum through discussions, research and anything other than lecture format. Quinn grew up in Missoula. She attended school at Montana State University in Bozeman, Mont. "I've always had a love f...

  • Musing from a Muslim Country

    Shane Kesterke, Elder - Mission Bible Fellowship|Nov 3, 2016

I started writing this in a hotel room near the end of a trip to a predominantly Muslim country. I thought I would share a few musings about our experience in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This was not the first time we have visited a Muslim country, but it is the first time we have spent more than a day in such a country. I have to admit, it has been a wonderful experience! The country is very modern, with infrastructure in some ways better than ours. The people are very friendly, the feeling is safe, and my wife has never felt like she was...

  • Potomac Gets Spooky for Halloween

  • Twenty-First Century Halloween

    Betty Vanderwielen, Pathfinder|Nov 3, 2016

SEELEY LAKE – While one of the main goals of the Twenty-First Century Grant program is to widen educational opportunities for children, a complementary goal is to promote parental involvement and strengthen the family unit. With this in mind, Bridget Laird, who organizes the Seeley Lake Elementary (SLE) grant activities, decided to encourage families to enjoy some Halloween fun together while also supporting a new endeavor in Seeley Lake. On Oct. 29, youngsters and their parents converged on H...
