  • I want to continue to work for you

US Senator Jon Tester, Washington, D.C.|Oct 18, 2018

Montana is the greatest state in the greatest nation in the world. It’s why three generations of my family have called Montana their home and it’s why I still farm the same dirt that my grandparents homesteaded more than 100 years ago. Farming instills a strong work ethic and I bring that work ethic with me to Washington. That’s why together, with the input of the folks on the ground in Montana, I’ve worked across the aisle to send 20 bills to President Trump’s desk and he has signed each of them into law. I’m proud to say that many of the...

  • Voters to decide fate of ballot collection

Caitlyn Patel, Community News Service UM School of Journalism|Oct 18, 2018

Supporters of LR-129 claim their proposal will ensure that mail-in ballots are secure and that the state’s elections are free of potential fraud, but opponents argue the entire effort may cause unnecessary gridlock at the polls and distract from any actual security issue. The initiative would prohibit the collection of another individual’s ballot, although family members and caregivers could deliver another person’s ballot but would need to sign a registry at the polling place. People not authorized to deliver the ballot to a polling place...

The Seeley-Swan Lady Blackhawks added a pair of conference wins to their record last week bringing it to 8-0 in conference and 11-3 overall. The Lady Blackhawks hosted the Lincoln Lynx Oct. 11. The Lynx were hungry for a win and with a lack of snowshoe hares in the building they took after the Lady Blackhawks. During the first two games the Lady Blackhawks came out strong but near the end of each game the Lynx closed the gap and tied it up. The teams were tied at 22-22 in game one and tied at...

  • I-185 beginning of the sin tax

    Dee Brown SD2, Hungry Horse, Mont.|Oct 18, 2018

I-185 is being touted as a health measure. Raising the price of a pack of cigarettes by $2 will encourage more people to quit smoking and pay for Medicaid expansion they say. Hospitals are promoting I-185 for more than a health reason. It is guaranteed income for them and bypasses the discussion in the legislature to put some sideboards on Medicaid expansion. It was projected that 40,000 people would be eligible for expansion four years ago. There are now over two times that number on the program. Did you know that millionaires on paper i.e. la...

  • US Bank's Simple Loans aren't so simple

    Erin Tate, Billings, Mont.|Oct 18, 2018

US Bank sells “Simple Loans” with 70-88 percent interest in Montana. People take these loans to buy snow tires, cover a mortgage payment or pay medical bills. Montana law caps predatory payday loans at 36 percent interest. But federally-insured banks are exempt from state laws and can charge whatever they want. These are the kind of bad loans that people never get out of, being offered by one of the biggest national banks. High interest rates leave customers reeling for another loan, trapping them into a cycle of debt. I’m sorry, but if it look...
