  • Your Bullet, Your Responsibility

    Andi Bourne, Pathfinder|Oct 13, 2016

SEELEY LAKE – Ever hear a gun shot in town and wonder if it’s legal? The short answer is, yes, it is legal. However, the long answer is it depends on a number of factors including safety, proximity to structures and land ownership. “When you start talking about firearms to Montanans or Americans, the first thing a lot of people think about is [their] second amendment rights,” said Federal Officer Tyler Robinson. “It’s a constitutional amendment and I value it deeply. But when it comes to harming or hurting another person, public safety is p...

    Andi Bourne, Pathfinder|Oct 13, 2016

SEELEY LAKE – Recreationists looking forward to renting the Monture Guard Station this winter will be happy to know the roof has been repaired. The Lolo National Forest (LNF) Historical Preservation team along with the Montana Conservation Corps (MCC) reroofed the building and fixed the failing chimney this past September. • Sewer Project - The Issues That Are Not Being Addressed

    E L Taylor, Seeley Lake, Mont.|Oct 13, 2016

SEELEY LAKE - The proposed sewer is not backed by everyone who will be charged for it. In fact, it would be good if some sort of survey was conducted to ascertain exactly how many participants are for it. We do not know this and in a democratic society this should be basic knowledge for everyone involved. This whole program has been thrust upon property owners with no vote and very little information about the total costs we’ll have to pay. I personally own two parcels. As I understand it, it could be levied a charge of $40,000 per parcel. O...

  • Shooting the Bear in Dogtown was Unethical - Individuals Should Have Been Charged

    Elinor Williamson, Seeley Lake, Mont.|Oct 13, 2016

SEELEY LAKE - So the hazing of a bear by two people and a dog in a pickup for an hour is legal and then calling a friend with tags to shoot the bear once it was hazed to the right property is legal? Well, people, the parties got by with it because no one took the time to interview the people who knew the truth. Oh yes, people reported it, but the game warden, in my opinion, chose not to call the people for the truth. To the hazers and the shooter of the bear: In my opinion you are unethical. You have no empathy and you all should be sitting in...

  • Rebuttal to Gunderson from the Swan Valley "Few"

Holl Hubbard and the Swan Valley Few, Swan Valley, Mont.|Oct 13, 2016

SWAN VALLEY - I would like to offer a response to a letter written in the Pathfinder’s Sept. 15, 2016 opinion section. First off, I would like to commend and thank Jim Boyd for his time, thoughts and voice concerning the Flathead National Forest Draft Revision. He has offered many ideas and thoughts that more accurately address the needs and concerns of this community. The Forest Service has failed to offer a plan that considers the Swan Valley community and its fire safety, economic hardships, cultural and historical use of the land and recrea...

  • Personality Changes

    Ken Silvestro PhD.|Oct 13, 2016

Personality is often considered a fixed characteristic or function within a person's psychology, however, this is far from the case. Personalities can change as much as any other psychological function. In a previous article, I described the four basic types associated with personalities – thinking, sensation, feeling and intuition. Thinking is concerned with details. Sensation stays focused in the moment, helping us know that something simply exists. Feeling evaluates people and situations, a...

  • Prepared to Survive a House Fire?

    Andi Bourne, Pathfinder|Oct 13, 2016

This is National Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 9-15. While this year's theme emphasizes replacing smoke alarms that are more than 10 years old, Seeley Lake Fire Chief Bob Vanden Heuvel said it's also a good time to stop for an hour and think about home fire safety. Vanden Heuvel said that in the U.S. 2000 fire fatalities occur each year. A home fire will double in size every 20-30 seconds. Home fires now also include deathly toxic by-products that kill before people in the home ever wake up....

  • Landscapes, Public Land and Boundaries

    Carleen Gonder|Oct 13, 2016

I didn’t write this as an expert on land management and wildlife issue, or as a representative of any organization. I did write it as someone with strong concerns about where society as it relates to those issues is headed, and as an area resident who would like to meet others for informal discussions about the issues presented. Gentrification of the West I’m from Nevada. My Dad was born and raised on a ranch in the Smith Valley area of Nevada that my grandparents owned. When Dad came back from World War II, he wanted nothing to do with the ran...

    Oct 13, 2016

MISSOULA – Diane McCue Hollinger, age 87, died on Sunday, Sept. 25 at The Springs in Missoula, due to a fall she took several days earlier. Diane loved doggies (especially little ones), Andy Williams (especially "Moon River"), and Fat Tire beer. She was a vivacious lady who loved to dance and to laugh, especially at herself. She was born Norma Diane Rockwell Sept. 8, 1929, in Los Angeles, Calif., to Norman and Elizabeth Root Rockwell. Norman (he was not the famous artist) was a stuntman in H... Full story

  • A New Path to Follow

Keith Maughan, Seeley Lake Branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints|Oct 13, 2016

The greatest sermon ever given was short, simple and revolutionary. Almost 2000 years ago, on a mount in Galilee, Jesus Christ taught a new way to live. A new path for all of us to follow. In Matthew chapters 5-7, Christ teaches what is now known as the Beatitudes. He tells us we will be blessed if we possess these attributes and tells us what blessings we will receive. “Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” Being “poor in spirit” means to be humble, not to be prideful. This means that we recognize and give Go...

  • Tim Fox Not Defending Fundamental Rights - Vote Larry Jent

    James C. Wangerin CPA-PFS, Deer Lodge, Mont.|Oct 13, 2016

DEER LODGE - A district judge ruled this week that the state attorney general has the authority to deny the city of Deer Lodge the right to participate in a decision to move the Title and Registration Bureau to Helena. The City needs to finish what they started and appeal the decision to the Montana Supreme Court. Pursuant to Article 9 of the Montana Constitution Right to Know, I requested a copy of the Attorney General’s (AG) “estimate of savings” and “state initiative” referred to in a July 5 newspaper article. The AG took 65 days to provid...

  • Sewer Project - Conduct a Fair Vote and Fix the Lake

    Colleen Krause, Seeley Lake, Mont.|Oct 13, 2016

SEELEY LAKE - Upon reading the current letter sent out by the elections office in Missoula, regarding the Seeley Lake sewer vote, I read the sentence “Upon review of Montana Code Annotated, it has been determined that “trust” or “corporations” are not eligible to vote in elections.” I am one of those affected because my lake property is in a trust. Out of the 510 people involved in the sewer project, there are probably several of us who have our properties under a trust or corporation. I looked back on my tax statements and found that I have...

  • Why to Support Dave Strohmaier

    C. Burt Caldwell, Missoula, Mont.|Oct 13, 2016

I am supporting Dave Strohmaier for Missoula County Commissioner. One reason I support Dave is his stand on social justice, which means promoting the common good as demonstrated in his co-sponsoring the Missoula City Non-Discrimination Ordnance. It also means taking care of the poor, the sick and the hungry so they too may be valuable, contributing members of our society. Additionally, social justice means environmental justice – that the lowest income people aren’t left alone to deal with the negative impacts of industry, such as the Mil...
