  • Magnets Aren't Just for the Fridge

    Sigrid Olson, Pathfinder|Oct 12, 2017

POTOMAC – Magnets are used in telephones, compasses and speakers. They can also prevent internal injuries in cattle. Some Potomac cattle producers give magnets to their cattle to prevent bovine traumatic reticuloperitonitis, otherwise known as 'hardware disease.' Cattle are ruminants and grazers. They may pick up small bits of metal like staples, wire, nails or other small pieces in fields and pastures or from processed feed. How cattle are fed and where they are fed can make a difference, s...

  • Claims of Nitrate/Chloride Pollution in Seeley Lake are Highly Exaggerated

    Colleen Krause, Seeley Lake, Mont.|Oct 12, 2017

SEELEY LAKE - Many of my friends and neighbors along Boy Scout Road and C Street are under the impression that the lake is severely polluted. They have all written letters regarding this theory. I took the time this summer to go to the Seeley Lake Water District and printed out all the information about all the water testing that has been done regarding the sewer. The tests for nitrates in the lake, which the Board paid for, are very low. The average being .06 mg/l. A full 10 represents the standard for issues with drinking water. The...

  • Thank You from the Seeley Lake Ranger District

Rachel Feigley, Seeley Lake District Ranger|Oct 12, 2017

The Seeley Lake Ranger District would like to thank everyone for your patience, dedication and hard work on the Rice Ridge and Liberty Fires. So many individuals contributed to the success of the firefighting efforts that it is impossible to comprehensively list all of those who participated in the daily briefings, cooperators meetings, worked out on the line, or supported the many functions that were in place. However, I do want to specifically mention the residents of Seeley Lake, Ovando and the associated communities; wildland and...

  • Sewer Board Veers from Mission When Setting Goals

    Beth Hutchinson, Seeley Lake, Mont.|Oct 12, 2017

SEELEY LAKE - The self-created mission for the sewer district clearly establishes why the board’s current proposal is so out-of-line. The statement introduces itself appropriately: “to assist the community in determining the need and cost for a centralized sewer system.” But, from that point on, the goals and subsequent board actions headed in a different direction. Rather than establishing NEED by developing a plan for a comprehensive study and analysis of environmental factors, the board settled for doing some water testing on FEWER SITES...

  • Support Outside District Lines?

    Don Larson, Seeley Lake, Mont.|Oct 12, 2017

SEELEY LAKE - The Pathfinder has published 41 letters to the editor about the proposed sewer in the past four months...June through September. Twenty-one have been for the project and 20 have been against it. All the 20 against the project were by residents who live and vote in the Sewer District. Of the 21 in support, only seven live and vote in the District. Curious...

  • Denial

    Ken Silvestro PhD.|Oct 12, 2017

Denial is word commonly used in the therapeutic world because many people deny their surrounding reality and their emotions. It is important to ask: Why is denial so common and what does that really mean? When a person has an illness and doesn't admit that she/he is ill, that is an example of denial. If a person hears that a loved one is dying and doesn't accept that fact, then denial is present. These descriptions are clear examples of denial. In both cases, the person is not willing to face...

  • National Fire Protection Week Provides Safety Awareness "Every Second Counts: Plan Two Ways Out"

    Oct 12, 2017

Knowing that today’s homes burn faster than ever, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) announced “Every Second Counts: Plan Two Ways Out” as the official theme for this year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign, Oct. 8-14. Experts say you may have as little as two minutes (or even less) to safely escape a typical home fire from the time the smoke alarm sounds. “Modern home furnishings, along with the fact that newer homes tend to be built with more open spaces and unprotected lightweight construction, all contribute to an increased...

  • Fingers Fly - Feet Dance to French Creole

    Andi Bourne, Pathfinder|Oct 12, 2017

SEELEY LAKE – Dennis Stroughmatt and L'Esprit Creole engaged the audience with their fast fingers, traditional stories and introduction to the Illinois French language and culture at their concert Sunday, Oct. 8 at Seeley-Swan High School. While many of the vocals were in Illinois French, they translated the storyline between songs. One of the common themes that guitarist Doug Hawe warned the audience was, "the pretty, beautiful, slow songs is most likely about death and destruction." S...

  • Ellis Relates the Experience of a Lifetime

    Betty Vanderwielen, Pathfinder|Oct 12, 2017

SWAN VALLEY – In the late 1950s, Swan Valley resident Steve Ellis developed an interest in missiles, especially in the Minuteman Missile program. That interest led him to a 24-year career in the United States Air Force (USAF). Throughout that time, Ellis worked at several bases. He filled a number of different roles but rockets and missiles were always at the center. Ellis entered the Air Force by way of the United States Military Academy at West Point. He said the USAF was just beginning its o...

  • From Light into Darkness

William Campbell, Elder, Mission Bible Fellowship|Oct 12, 2017

Francis Scott Key once said, “The patriot who feels himself in the service of God, who acknowledges Him in all his ways, has the promise of almighty direction, and will find His Word in his greatest darkness, ‘A lamp unto his feet, and a lamp unto his paths.’” And Woodrow Wilson said in 1911, “We are born unto a Christian nation.” If you’re over 60, you may remember different times, lighter times, times when the most awful thing you could do in school was talk or chew gum in class. Please don’t misunderstand me. I’m not saying that murde...

  • New Executive Director Joins Swan Valley Connections

    Andi Bourne, Pathfinder|Oct 12, 2017

  • Tough Week for Lady Blackhawks

    Nathan Bourne, Pathfinder|Oct 12, 2017

SEELEY LAKE - The Seeley-Swan Lady Blackhawks had a rough week as they came up short on the road and at home. With just two weeks until the district tournament, Lady Blackhawks Head Coach Tammy Lewis remains optimistic. In the coming week the Lady Blackhawks only have one home match compared to the last couple weeks with three matches each. Lewis plans to make the best of the extra...
