  • Legal processes continue for Clearwater gravel mine

    Jean Pocha, Reporter|Sep 19, 2024

In a recent Montana Supreme Court ruling, the temporary restraining order against LHC, Inc. a company that applied for an opencut mining permit for mining gravel on Highway 83 near Elbow Lake, was rescinded. The decision was made due to a technical difference between the state Supreme Court and District Court Judge John Larson, who originally set the restraining order in July 2023. The restraining order was applied for in the Fourth Judicial District Court, which includes Missoula County, by Protect the Clearwater, a local grassroots group form...

The Clearwater Resource Council hosted a day-long conference on Sept. 6 focused on watershed hydrology, how water moves throughout the Clearwater Basin, the potential for it to pick up pollutants and how septic systems can play into those processes. • Support our local pharmacy

    Steve Bowen, Seeley Lake|Sep 19, 2024

Thank you for the very insightful and illuminating article in the Sept. 5, 2024 Pathfinder regarding the challenges our local pharmacist, Karen Dove, and the Seeley Swan Pharmacy face from both outside sources and local considerations. For starters we should all recognize how lucky our small community is to have its own full service pharmacy. As the article points out, Dove’s facility is the only pharmacy serving all the areas between Big Fork, Lincoln and Missoula. It should also be noted that small independent pharmacies such as ours are unfo...

  • Our vision for Holland Lake Lodge

    Stewards of the Swan Valley|Sep 19, 2024

Two years ago, a Utah ski corporation and the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) announced a plan to highly develop the rustic Holland Lake Lodge on public land in Condon in the rural Swan Valley. The ski corporation, POWDR, and USFS touched off a blistering public debate about the future not only of the small town and relatively wild valley, but a discussion about the future of Montana and the high-dollar outside influences changing the Big Sky State’s property, social and natural values. Skip ahead two years, and the situation has only become more c...

  • A tempestuous love affair

    Alan Muskett MD|Sep 19, 2024

Have you ever had one of those relationships where, when it is good, it is great — a synchronized dance, a symphony, fireworks and flowers. But when it is bad, it is very bad — angry noises, smoke, disillusionment. For years, I’ve been locked in such a love/hate quagmire. Not with my wife, Pam, we’re pretty boring in that regard, but with a Vermeer BC625. Some might say that such strong feelings for a wood chipper are abnormal. (Before throwing stones, have you ever used the term “my baby” referring to a car, truck, boat, or snowmobile?) But wh...

  • Kim Haines memorial flowers, thanks to Seeley Lake local for making it happen

    Keely Larson, Editor|Sep 19, 2024

The photo of the handmade sign and snapdragons planted near the corner of Boy Scout Road and Highway 83 by a light pole was missing a bit of information in last week's Pathfinder. Zelda Haines wanted to make sure that Cole and Keanna Henrekin were given credit for their contributions. Cole made the sign in his shop, Peak Fabrication, and donated it in memory of Zelda's husband, Kim, who was a principal at Seeley-Swan High School and a beloved track and field coach before he lost his battle with...

  • Memories of 9/11 at the World Trade Center

    Tom Browder, Seeley Lake|Sep 19, 2024

Editor's note: The Pathfinder published this piece on the 20th anniversary of Sept. 11. We're grateful to Mr. Browder for allowing us to do so again a few years later. Last Wednesday was the 23rd anniversary of an event that has totally changed our lives and how we look at the world. On that morning back in 2001, I walked through the World Trade Center in New York City as I went to my office in Lower Manhattan. Memories from that day are as clear to me today as the skies were on that fine fall...

  • Blackhawks remain undefeated

    Keely Larson, Editor|Sep 19, 2024

Hype is building in Seeley Lake for the Blackhawk football team. So far in the season, they're undefeated. "It's been awhile since we've started out three-and-o," Jacob Haley, Blackhawk football coach, said. Last weekend the team faced off against Mission, who was also undefeated until they went up against the Blackhawks. Mission's offensive was pretty good on film, Haley said, but the Blackhawks' defense was phenomenal. The game started out a little rough, but at halftime the Blackhawks had...
