  • Subsidy Could Reduce Monthly Cost to $50

    Nathan Bourne, Pathfinder|Jul 28, 2016

SEELEY LAKE - The Seeley Lake Sewer Board (SLSB) was presented with a proposal to reduce projected costs for Phase I residential lots from $165 to $50 per month and commercial lots to $75 per month. With the new proposal, there may not be a vote on the proposed treatment plant and collection system but landowners would have a protest provision. At the July 21 board meeting, District Manager Greg Robertson explained how subsidies and changes in how the construction debt is spread across the district would accomplish this. The district currently...

  • Local Paper No Place for Fearmongering

    Mark Melvin, Seeley Lake, Mont.|Jul 28, 2016
    1

SEELEY LAKE - I’m writing about the July 14th issue of the Pathfinder. I was rather disturbed to see the prominent black box of divisive fearmongering on the second page. And the text next to it was equally inflammatory. There is a huge difference between an opinion and panicked, xenophobic ranting (including a rather glaring strawman fallacy, among other things). I understand it’s a letters-to-the-editor section but as a media institution I believe you have a responsibility to distribute information, not fear. Placing that message in blo...

  • Get Behind It, Work Out the Bugs

    Don Larson, Seeley Lake, Mont.|Jul 28, 2016

SEELEY LAKE - First, good on Chris Stout for taking the initiative and organizing the Bob Marshall Wilderness Music Festival. Work the bugs out and get the business community on board and you will have a nice annual event which will advertise and promote Seeley Lake as the wonderful recreation area it is. Second, good on Curt Friede for raising many valid concerns about the event and identifying some of the bugs. Brick and mortar businesses always take a hit of sorts when outside food and beer vendors come to town for the big weekends but the...

  • Bob Marshall in Downtown Seeley

    Ron Cox, Seeley Lake, Mont.|Jul 28, 2016

SEELEY LAKE - When I first heard about the Bob Marshall Music Festival, I wondered how the champion of wilderness and solitude would feel about using his name for that event. The long distant races would be appropriate for his legendary 50-miles hikes with a knapsack and tennis shoes. He probably wouldn’t mind a little music. Beer?? The conflict about the festival location is a reminder that the community should pay attention and be involved in the County proposal to sell off the Drew Creek County Park located at the southeastern edge of the Do...

  • Alcohol Not Acceptable On School Grounds, EVER!

    LaRee Morris, Seeley Lake, Mont.|Jul 28, 2016

SEELEY LAKE - Why would anyone think it’s acceptable to sell alcohol at our elementary school grounds??? There are laws to prevent it!!! Yet, the Seeley Lake Community Foundation (SLCF), which normally does wonderful things for our community, was able to obtain a permit to do so for the Bob Marshall Music Festival. SLCF can you explain to me how that this lines up with your mission statement, because I can’t see it? Seeley Lake Elementary Administration/Board... REALLY??? You think this is acceptable for our grade school??? SLE Adm...

  • Beware of Cheatgrass

Lindsey Bona-Eggeman, Missoula County Weed District, Weed Management Area Coordinator|Jul 28, 2016

Cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum) is an invasive grass that is widespread in Missoula County. This grass is a winter annual, meaning the seeds germinate in the fall and the plant overwinters, taking advantage of late fall and early spring moisture at a time when most of our native plants are dormant. This growth characteristic of cheatgrass gives it a competitive advantage over many of our native species and can be particularly problematic when trying to reseed disturbed areas. Cheatgrass also is an...

  • New Biological Herbicide for Cheatgrass

Chris Carlson, Missoula Parks and Recreation, Research and Monitoring Program|Jul 28, 2016

Cheatgrass (downy brome, Bromus tectorum) is known throughout the Western U.S. as one of our most widespread and difficult to control weeds. Grain farmers, ranchers, dog walkers and conservationists all curse its early growth habit and ability to spread and persist into disturbed and undisturbed settings. Currently, few strategies exist which provide adequate control of cheatgrass. But there may be hope yet! Ann Kennedy, a researcher with the Agricultural Research Service at Washington State University, has isolated a strain of naturally...

  • Basketry Elevated to Art

    Betty Vanderwielen, Pathfinder|Jul 28, 2016

SEELEY LAKE - A basket weaver uses natural or man-made fibers to create a container that can be used for some practical purpose. A fiber artist might make a basket but the item's practical purpose is secondary to its value as a work of art. With fiber art, the focus is on the beauty of the materials, admiration for the skill of the weaver and appreciation for the amount of time and patience required to bring the piece to completion. Seeley Lake resident Patti Chamberlin is a fiber artist....

  • Plans & Instructions

Shane Kesterke, Elder Mission Bible Fellowship|Jul 28, 2016

As a builder, I have the opportunity to look at a lot of plans for all kinds of various projects. For the most part, I enjoy it - there is such a variety of building styles and types out there with every project being unique in some way or another that I enjoy looking at the plans. And of course, it is an indispensible part of my job. Those plans are my guide for what to build and how to build it, and without them, I generally could not do the project or even give a price for doing the project. Over the years I have noticed that I have yet to...
