    Betty Vanderwielen, Pathfinder|Jun 20, 2019

SALMON PRAIRIE – When John Yajko graduated from college, he got a job as a football coach at Franklin and Marshall College in Pennsylvania. It looked like the beginning of a promising sports career – until he received a draft notice. Not wanting to go into the Army, Yajko immediately went down to the Air Force recruiting agency and signed up. Hoping to become a pilot, he added his name to a long list of others who hoped for the same thing. In the meantime, he went first to Officers Training Sch...

  • A tough question or a "no brainer"?

    Beth Hutchinson, Seeley Lake, Mont.|Jun 20, 2019

SEELEY LAKE - In what world does a board director ask the district manager for specific information relating to a topic the manager discussed with the public at a recent meeting and be denied access to that information? That occurred last week in the bizarre world of the Seeley Lake Sewer District. On June 10th I emailed district manager Jean Curtiss requesting the cost estimates for Phases 3 and 4 which became part of the public discussion at the special board meeting on June 6. Ms. Curtiss responded saying that she would not release the data...

On June 7, Senator Jon Tester reintroduced the Blackfoot Clearwater Stewardship Act. As members of the Blackfoot Clearwater Stewardship Project, we sincerely thank our senior senator for his leadership and for continuing to champion this bipartisan bill that 73 percent of Montanans support. The reason for the bill’s popularity is simple: It offers something for just about every Montanan. • It opens up new snowmobiling opportunities by creating the 2,000-acre Otatsy Recreation Management Area near Ovando. • It preserves prized mountain bike...

  • Escape to the backwoods

    Dale Terrillion|Jun 20, 2019

Ya hear a lot these days about bullying in schools. Nothing new under the sun. There was a lot of us who went through it. Some older boys and girls are just plain mean. And tweren't raised right either. Along the back trails of my memories there was a family from the coal mines of Pennsylvania. The Dad had black lung. They ended up as far as their old jalopy would take'em, right at a dilapidated, run down homestead shack owned by a Mennonite farmer. They just moved right in with what little...

  • Just as He did

Walter Hill, Elder of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saint|Jun 20, 2019

In this busy world in which we find ourselves, it is sometimes good to take a step back and ask the question, what is this life all about? The question is how can we show that love? We may love a person, and recognize a need they have, but feel inadequate to respond. But it doesn’t have to be a big thing. For some, the giving of a smile, a friendly “he...
