  • Board President Threatens Legal Action

    Nathan Bourne, Pathfinder|May 31, 2018

SEELEY LAKE - The Seeley Lake Sewer District Board held a special meeting May 24 where board President Mike Boltz threatened to file for an injunction to keep newly elected board members from derailing the sewer project. In other business, the board passed a resolution to accept an Environmental Assessment instead of having to go through a full Environmental Impact Statement. The assessment was required for the district to apply for funding from the Treasure State Endowment Program (TSEP) for Phase 2 of the collection system. In the May 8...

    Zoie Koostra, Pathfinder|May 31, 2018

SEELEY LAKE - Seeley Lake honored its veterans this Memorial Day at a ceremony that included prayers and a demonstration of the 13 folds of the U.S. flag was accompanied by an explanation for each fold. Barbara Knopp, who lead the ceremony, gave a brief history of Memorial Day's origins. "The observance of this day was born in 1863 when Confederate women were cleaning their soldiers graves and noticed how badly the Union soldiers graves were overgrown with weeds and mud," she told the crowd....

    Zoie Koostra, Pathfinder|May 31, 2018

SEELEY LAKE - Sixteen-year-old Bailey Boyles shouted "Hip hip!" and the boat she was trailing behind accelerated, allowing her to sit upright on her hydrofoil. The group of people in the boat cheered as she rode, they were all members of her family or other hydrofoilers that her family had known for years. The 10th annual Seeley Lake Invitational hydrofoiling event took place over this Memorial Day weekend, hosted by Missoula residents Keith Gyles, his wife Robin and Seeley Lake resident Woody...

  • Cast Your Vote for Duane "Cecil" Schlabach

Jack Rich - Rich Ranch, Seeley Lake, Mont.|May 31, 2018

I am writing this letter to give my strong support for Duane “Cecil” Schlabach as our representative for HD 92. I’ve known Duane for 18 years, and in the process watched him travel his “Montana road” - first as a wilderness packer/guide, followed by a stint as a rodeo bronc rider, then as a carpenter, as a university student pursuing higher education and for the last several years as a teacher at Seeley Lake Elementary. Over the years he has earned and continually increased my respect for his motivation, drive, work ethic and strong core valu...

  • Lee Bridges - Best Representative You Could Ever Have

    Bridget Johnson, Missoula, Mont.|May 31, 2018

I don’t remember when I’ve been so excited about an election -- maybe 2008? A major reason is that I have had the amazing opportunity to work on my friend’s campaign. Lee Bridges is running for House District 92 -- it’s a unique district stretching from East Missoula, east to Clinton, north to Seeley, then Condon. Lee has lived in the district for decades and is very involved in the community. She is a union sheet metal worker, very hard-working, scary smart, quick to understand, creative, a natural consensus seeker. I have spent hours with he...

  • Bridges is Getting My Vote

    Joseph Spencer, East Missoula, Mont.|May 31, 2018

As a lifelong resident of East Missoula (HD92), I believe we need a strong and independent voice for the working class dogs, the tough blue collar folks who make up the majority of District 92. Lee Bridges is that voice and she’s getting my vote. Lee has been a neighbor and friend for over 34 years. You won’t find a better representative than her. She’s a union sheet metal worker and mechanic, an entrepreneur who restores and rides Harleys, a skilled tradesman and union supporter, a volunteer firefighter, an East Missoula Community Counc...

  • Arizona or Bust

    Dale Terrillion|May 31, 2018

I started the winter helping plow and shovel – like everyone else. Mostly I hung around then maybe catch another wolf. What's that about the best-laid plans of mice and me? So anyway, I didn't plan on jealous people to sabotage my traps. My only alternative was to call in the game warden who proved to be of little help. I was disappointed to say the least. Not wanting to take matters in my own hands, thus lose my Christian witness, I decided to head for the land of coyotes and cactus – rat...

  • Committee Addresses Proposed Ice Rink Questions and Concerns

    Andi Bourne, Pathfinder|May 31, 2018

SEELEY LAKE – The proposal of the community ice rink on the Seeley Lake Elementary fields has generated discussion and a few common concerns in the community. Committee members Scott Eggeman and Gary Swain feel the main goal for the rink would be to provide an opportunity for local youth to learn how to skate and become a community asset during the longest season of the year. They also don’t feel that it excludes any other uses of the SLE fields. The SLE School board has yet to make a decision on the request. The community is encouraged to sub...

  • Swan Valley Graduates Three

    Zoie Koostra, Pathfinder|May 31, 2018

SWAN VALLEY - It was a big day for the Richardson family at Swan Valley Elementary. Seth Richardson, an eighth grader, was presented with his diploma by his father and honored in a graduation ceremony alongside two other students who were graduating from kindergarten. Richardson's father Nathan presented him with his diploma and gave his son a big hug. "It was pretty overwhelming," Nathan said. "It's a little silly to have a ceremony for graduating eighth grade, but it's still a milestone....

    Zoie Koostra, Pathfinder|May 31, 2018

SWAN VALLEY - At the Swan Valley Elementary spring concert, students from kindergarten to middle school sang, played instruments and even acted in a musical play about ancient history. • Yellowflag Iris and Purple Loosestrife on the Clearwater River

Jed Little, Missoula County Weed District|May 31, 2018

In 2004 when the Missoula County Weed District initially mapped the infestation of yellowflag iris that had recently been reported to us on the Clearwater River between Salmon Lake and the Blackfoot River, we faced a daunting challenge: 10 miles of river, both banks heavily infested and nearly 83 acres of dense thickets peppered with yellowflag iris. The yellowflag iris was already beginning to fill-in shallow bays on Elbow Lake, degrade wetlands and river bank habitat on the Clearwater River...

  • Kinnickinnick – A Hardy Little Plant

    Randi de Santa Anna|May 31, 2018

Kinnickinnick, or bearberry, which grows throughout the forests of the West, often goes unnoticed because it is not a showy plant. But it is one of my favorites because each spring, when the arrival of warm weather seems utterly improbable, kinnickinnick's bright red berries and tiny evergreen leaves are the first to emerge from under the snow. Its resilience always reassures me the earth will come back to life. Originally, kinnickinnick was a trading term eastern tribes gave to all plants that...

When she rescued 20 abandoned kittens and adult cats she had to clear out a spare bedroom to house them all. "When my daughter saw the Facebook post [about the abandoned cats in the Morrell area], she wanted us to go get them," Vernarsky said. "And I was like 'Of course!'" • The God Who Says "GO"

Roger Andruss, Elder, Condon Community Church|May 31, 2018

“The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you.” (Genesis 12:1) My wife and I are privileged to travel a lot and have been fortunate enough to serve on the African continent over a dozen times. Occasionally I hear stories from people about their fear of surrendering their will to God because, “God might send me to Africa or something!” But as we grow to know God more and trust in His character, it’s not a fearful thing to say, “Here am I Lord, send me!” He is a God who i...
