    Asa Thomas Metcalfe|Apr 27, 2023

Although Seeley Lake is known as a town for outdoor recreation, it so far has been lacking any accommodation for organized use of motorized vehicles on the trails. “There’s one quarter of one mile of ATV trails,” said Curtis Friede, a local businessman who has been working for years to increase forest access for outdoor recreation vehicles. “There are zero mountain bike trails and zero single track for motorcycles, zero.” The one off-road vehicle that has wide access to the forest lands around Seeley Lake are snowmobiles. While the snow trails...

  • Letter from the Editor

    Asa Thomas Metcalfe|Apr 27, 2023

The first week I started selecting content I remember choosing a public release about a herpes outbreak among horses in the Flathead Valley and thinking “Oh god, I hope that doesn’t end up on the kid’s page.” It didn’t. It ended up below the Passages column. But since that week I’ve been very mindful of what I add to the top of that page. I’ve opted to use stories about public parades or about the schools because I feel that it’s an almost sacred space. Literacy is something sacred to me, and as a writer it is something I want to keep sacred...

“When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, ‘Peace be with you.’” John 20:19 My father entered into eternal life on April 4, 2010. • Burn, Baby, Burn!

Alta Martin, DNRC Fire Prevention Assistant Missoula County Fire Protection Association|Apr 27, 2023

The grass getting green, the sun parting the clouds, temperatures becoming comfortable, and pollen tickling noses can only mean one thing: spring burn season is upon us! Spring is not only one of Montana’s many wonders, but it is also the best time to collect and burn yard debris before summer takes us into fire season. Spring burn permits may seem like a hassle or headache, but they are required for the debris burn period of March 1st to August 31st. Let this be your guide to applying for, paying, and activating your permits while m...

Roughly once per month a small film club meets in the hayloft of the Seeley Lake Historic Museum for a curated selection of films with one common theme, a connection to the state of Montana. "We've done writings of a well-known Missoula writer named Dorothy M. Johnson, three of whose books were made into movies," said Tom Browder, who organizes the event and is part of deciding which films to show. Johnson, who was a prolific author of western-themed books, and an instructor at the University...

    Jan and Bill Lombardi|Apr 27, 2023

From the beginning, Maxim Loskutoff's debut novel, Ruthie Fear, rings with foreboding. The protagonist, Ruthie, lives in a ramshackle trailer with her father, Rutherford, in Montana's Bitterroot Valley under the watchful eye of Trapper Peak, which is "hooked like a finger beckoning her above the treeline" and looks down on her like the missing mother she pines for. Cast adrift from the shuttered local lumber mill, Rutherford scrounges for odd construction jobs. He survives by hunting and...

  • New voter registration system removes fire board election from ballots mailed to tax-exempt properties

    Asa Thomas Metcalfe|Apr 27, 2023

SEELEY LAKE- Some voters in the area may be missing a ballot question regarding the Fire District Board election. A new voter registration system in use this year lines up voter registration with GIS maps which compare the property with tax-payer information to decide which issues should, or shouldn't be included in each ballot. The new system removed location specific questions from ballots going outside of the eligible area, but it also removed the election question from properties covered by tax assistance programs such as those for...
