What do you think causes school shootings? Do people hit a breaking point that just sends them over the edge? Or is it that they are "mental" and just missed their medication timeline? Not a lot of people go through the tragedy of school shootings, and hopefully not many will but most brush the person's actions off. There are lots of great reasons to live in the Swan Valley but occasionally we find some issues that make it difficult to connect to the “outside” world, especially when it comes to political decisions that have large impact’s on our life style, often dictated by people that live several miles from the Swan. With only around 500 voters, we do not have the political clout to stand up for our rights as citizens and voters in our area. This election gives us some hope as we have a local citizen that has filed for House District 92 and will give...

Genetic diversity of wildlife populations are an important consideration for long term conservation. Having a variety of genetic traits across a population is generally considered highly advantageous, as it allows a species a large toolbox of traits to respond to changes in environment, population size, mutation and other ecological, biological or social factors. Grizzly bears are no such exception and a closer look at bear reproductively and biology can yield some insight into how having genetic variability among individuals is an important...

This poem came about last year after my big wreck on Woodrow, who in the poem is called Biscuit. Waxes more poetic to me. After I healed from my last wreck I brought ol' Biscuit out to the arena and saddled him up. All went perfectly well. As I mounted and threw my right leg over the ol' highback saddle, all strength left and it fell on his rump...which as you know is a signal to move ahead, which he did. Before I could get my leg over he was at a walk, takin' my left leg with my foot in the...

Have you ever read or heard descriptive words when used together seem to make no sense or seem to be set in opposition with each other? Sometimes printed on a shoebox are the words "single pair". At first glance that seems contradictory. How can a pair be single? On second thought it could mean there is one pair of shoes in the box. The words "single pair" is an oxymoron that uses words that have seemingly opposite meanings together. Oxymorons can be used to point out two qualities that occur...

Most, if not all, of us have at one time or another said, “I can’t.” Whenever I uttered those words as a young boy, my Dad would always remind me that, “Can’t never accomplished anything.” In like manner, one of my business partners would always tell our sales people, “If you think you can, you can. If you think you can’t, you can’t. Either way you are right.” Both were expressions of positive thinking and reminders to not limit ourselves. Yet the reality of life is that there are some things that are too big (even for a positive thinker)....
