  • Conflict or Collaboration over Public Lands?

    A. Lee Boman, Seeley Lake, Mont.|Feb 18, 2016

Most Montanans have their favorite outdoor places. It might be a trout stream, a view from a mountaintop or a mountain bike loop. Wherever your favorite places are, chances are they are on Montana’s public lands. Management of our public lands is a hot topic. Some radicals want to control public lands unlawfully using guns. The American Land Council led by their new CEO, Montana state Sen. Jennifer Fielder, wants to take control of our public lands through legislation. Both efforts ignore the fact that the majority of Montanans treasure p...

  • Rethink Your Position on Refuges

Klaus von Stutterheim, Seeley Lake, Mont.|Feb 18, 2016
    1

A fiery debate has broken out about refugees and especially about the possibility of refugees in Missoula, fanned perhaps by the sometimes incendiary tenor of the Presidential primary debates. But a more dispassionate examination of the facts suggests that things are nowhere near as dire as some fear. At the outset, we need to acknowledge that Europe finds itself in the most serious crisis in a generation. Hundreds of thousands of refugees are pouring across open borders into Germany alone, a country smaller than Montana. And the combustible...

  • Can ya speak up a little for me please?

    Mule Bit Perkins|Feb 18, 2016

I don't hear as good as I used to. It's really no big deal since most of the fellas I associate with can hear even less then I can. My hearing is failing for a number of reasons, one of which is a story in itself. The main reason for this article is I guess my age. But when ya take your coffee with fellas even older than me... well it takes on a whole new dimension. A few weeks ago I was takin' my mornin' coffee with Gene, Jim, John and Virgil. Now the only one who can really hear is Gene. John...

  • Winter Survival is for the Birds

Bruce Auchly, Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks|Feb 18, 2016

It's winter. Nights are long, often cold. Days are short, sometimes with a sun that acts like it doesn't want to come out and play. Depending on our disposition and age, we might smile or growl about the cold and snow. But if we go outside for any length of time we dress for the weather. They can range from about...
