    Andi Bourne, Pathfinder|Feb 2, 2017

SEELEY LAKE – Saturday, Jan. 28 marked the 35th annual Over Seeley's Creeks & Ridges (OSCR). Nearly 150 racers participated in the 50 kilometer (K), 20K, 10K or 5K races. When talking with those who have raced numerous years there are no shortage of stories, some true and others questionable. While the OSCR Hall of Fame posted 35 years of 50K winners at the Saturday awards ceremony and chili feed, it was connecting with old friends and sharing stories that so many cherished. • Response to "Not My Land"

    John Rice, Seeley Lake, Mont.|Feb 2, 2017

SEELEY LAKE - In response to the recent letter to the Pathfinder Editor dated Jan. 19, 2017 entitled Not My Land by Roxie Sterling. My family also has a long history here with a grandfather who ran a stagecoach and later became sheriff of Missoula County. Roxie, I am sure you would agree that your property value increased as a result of the Double Arrow Development. However, the same cannot be said of the property values of those unfortunate folks who are neighbors of this gravel pit if it is allowed to proceed. I am also quite sure you must...

  • Thoughts on the Speed Limit Change

    Lynn Carey, Seeley Lake, Mont.|Feb 2, 2017

SEELEY LAKE - I read with interest the article about the speed limits through town. Now I was totally out of the loop as to the where fore, what fore of the speed limit change. I would like to offer a few thoughts I have on the subject. I have no problem with extending the speed limit farther south to the turn lane at the Market. But to go from 25 miles per hour (mph) to 35 mph, then to 40 mph is just plain ridiculous. They could have gone from 25 to 40 with no problem. Concerning enforcement, if the local officers would sit at the plumbing...

SEELEY LAKE - As Chair of the Seeley Lake Community Council’s Traffic Project, I feel it’s my civic duty to ensure that the public is informed of all the facts surrounding the Council’s Traffic Project. This article is a direct response to the article in the Pathfinder last week about opposition to the reduced speed limits [entitled “Petition Demands Speed Limit Change Reversed]. My purpose here is to provide clarity with facts since the Council was never contacted for comment as part of last week’s article. The genesis of the Council’s...

  • Behavior or Psychology

    Ken Silvestro PhD.|Feb 2, 2017

Many people see behavior, or the way we function in life, as an answer to all our problems. In other words, if we change our behaviors, we can change our concerns or problems. Of course, there is some truth to this statement but behavior is only the tip of the iceberg. Even though we walk, talk, join groups, argue, play sports and perform many other behaviors, people often don't consider that these behaviors are associated with other parts of human nature. Another part of human nature is our...

  • Water Quality in the Swan Valley – It Takes Work!

    Maria Mantas, Swan Valley Connections|Feb 2, 2017

As residents of the Swan Valley, most of us agree there is one thing we all value in our landscape, water. Most people living here draw their drinking water from wells, which people brag about being "the best tasting well water anywhere." • Apologia Pro Vita Sua

    Erik Iverson, Holy Cross-Seeley Lake and Faith-Condon Lutheran Churches|Feb 2, 2017

“You gave me these emotions, but didn’t tell me how to use them....What of my soul? Do I have one?...Who are these people of which I am comprised? Good people...bad people? Did you know that I could play this (flute)? Does this knowledge reside in these hands...in this mind...in this heart? Who am I?” Usually when we hear the name “Frankenstein”, we think of a B movie and creature. Eighteen-year-old Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel spoke of far deeper things, intimated in the original subtitle: “or, The Modern Prometheus.” The 1994 cinema adaptati...

Michael Siebert, UM Community News Service, University of Montana School of Journalism|Feb 2, 2017

HELENA - Members of the Montana House Fish, Wildlife and Parks Committee heard a bill last week that would require landowners to allow anyone access through their land in order to reach nearby public lands. Introduced by Rep. Tom Jacobson, D-Great Falls, House Bill 243 specifically prevents landowners with property that surrounds state land from allowing only certain wildlife outfitters access, sometimes through leasing. “There’s 1.2 million acres of inaccessible state land in the state of Montana,” Jacobson said. Jacobson said it’s an issue of...

It seems that this year much of Montana is experiencing a tough winter but it’s actually not. We are just getting back to winter after last year’s weird spell. Temperature readings haven’t gone wild – yet. No reporting stations have recorded 50 below or colder and the coldest known low during January’s first week was 46 below Fahrenheit. Twenty to 30 below was more prevalent in the past. Stories abound about conditions changing quickly and in a pronounced way. Montana holds the national record for cold with a 70-degrees-below-zero reading near...

  • Community Briefs

    Feb 2, 2017

Caution To All Seeley Lake Water Customers SEELEY LAKE - The Water District has had numerous calls regarding frozen water service lines. This is a friendly reminder to all customers to take care of their pipes. Insulate pipes well and keep them warm. Refrain from plowing snow above water lines and driving on them. The snow is a good insulator and moving it actually drives the frost deeper. It is also recommended to trickle cold water. A small trickle of water keeps the water moving and keeps it from freezing. Due to the cold weather and the...
