  • Two huskies apprehended

    Griffen Smith, of the Pathfinder|Nov 2, 2023

The two dogs that attacked a goat and fed on a deer carcass while on the loose for multiple days last month have been located and the owners have been fined. Two animals, one white and one black husky, caused trouble near the Seeley Lake Airport, challenging residents’ dogs and attacking livestock. Missy Kesterke reported that her goat was badly mauled, but she said the goat is expected to survive. The two dogs were later located outside of Seeley Lake. Missoula County Animal Control did not disclose where. The owners of the dogs received f...

  • 'Into the Flames' book reflects on firefighter's escape from death

    Griffen Smith, of the Pathfinder|Nov 2, 2023

When Sandi Hilderman looked through her late brother's possessions, she found a package with hundreds of handwritten pages in a manila envelope. They were his stories from his career as a wildland firefighter. "This is a story he never told our parents, although we knew he got injured," Hilderman said during a book tour in Condon on Oct. 25. "But it is a story about a fire and how he was trapped in one of them." Her brother, Robert Ritchey, served as a wildland firefighter for decades at the...

  • Local man has victory over the Appalachian Trail

    Jean Pocha, of the Pathfinder|Nov 2, 2023

Kyle Peltier from Seeley Lake prepared for the Appalachian Trail (AT) as his second leg of hiking the triple crown last winter, but he didn't know how different it would be from the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) he hiked in 2021. Nearing his 23rd birthday, Peltier has hiked 4,853 miles in the past few years. "The AT is basically some hiking with glorified rock climbing while carrying a 30 pound backpack," Peltier said. "The AT is basically an obstacle course." According to Peltier, the terrain...

  • Property tax deadline extended

    Griffen Smith, of the Pathfinder|Nov 2, 2023

Missoula County has announced a later property tax due date after officials said the state sent tax roll information late. The new deadline for property tax bills will be Friday, Dec. 8, according to an Oct. 25 press release. Paper bills must be postmarked by the date. Usually tax bills must be sent to the county by Nov. 30. With the delay, bills are reaching residents the first week of November. Although residents will get a physical bill, the county encouraged those who could to pay online at missoulataxes.us. People can also drop off their...

  • $100 million rate heist?

Monica Tranel, candidate for Montana western District for U.S. Congress|Nov 2, 2023

As the first snow is falling, and freezing temperatures hit, we are getting pummeled with another huge energy rate increase, thanks to the five Republicans on the Montana Public Service Commission. On Wednesday the Commission unanimously approved a 28% rate increase from last year, the majority of which will fall on small businesses and residential users – renters and homeowners. This historical rate hike goes into effect Nov. 1 – meaning that the heat you need right now is costing you nearly one-third more than what you were paying before thi...

  • Holland Lake bull trout need clean water

Arlene Montgomery, Program Director for Friends of the Wild Swan|Nov 2, 2023

Bull trout in Holland Lake are unique yet vulnerable. Holland Lake harbors a “disjunct” core area population of bull trout meaning that bull trout spawn in Holland Creek and mature in Holland Lake rather than migrating to Swan Lake like most bull trout in the Swan watershed. In 2010, the US Fish and Wildlife Service designated the Holland Lake core area as critical habitat because it contains the features essential for bull trout conservation. They have very specific habitat requirements such as clean water with very little fine sediment in...

  • A productive legislative session for hunters and landowners

Senators Steve Hinebauch Bob Brown and Mike Lang|Nov 2, 2023

Hunting season has arrived! As hunters flock to the hills in pursuit of Montana’s treasured big game species, we want to take a moment to acknowledge the good work that was done in this spring’s legislative session for hunters, landowners, and conservationists alike. Wildlife issues have frequently been overcome with intense division in previous legislative sessions. 2023 was different. Various stakeholders that are often in sharp disagreement on wildlife and land management policies managed to set aside their differences and work col...

  • Logo promotes SLE school pride

    SLE Parent Teacher Club|Nov 2, 2023

When then-sixth grader Nic Little Coyote heard about the logo contest for Seeley Lake Elementary he decided he would submit a design. Eagles are sacred in his Northern Cheyenne culture and he enjoyed drawing. Now six years later, Little Coyote's logo continues to be a symbol of SLE school pride. The Seeley Lake Elementary Parent Teacher Club adopted the logo and is now offering SLE Spirit Gear. Little Coyote was raised on the Northern Cheyenne reservation in Lame Deer, Montana. He moved to Seele...

  • Volleyball goes 1-2 at district, drop to Lincoln

    Griffen Smith, of the Pathfinder|Nov 2, 2023

The Seeley-Swan High School Volleyball Team started the postseason strong with a sweep over Victor, but struggled to respond against later teams, and was eliminated after losing to Lincoln on Oct. 26. The team finished third in conference, giving it a decent route versus the last ranked team. The Blackhawks made easy work of Victor, sweeping the pirates in three sets. The Blackhawks then went on to face Philipsburg, the second ranked team in Class C District 13 volleyball. The Prospectors earned...

  • There is still time for streamers

Chuck Stranahan, The Fly Fishing Journal|Nov 2, 2023

I had an invitation from a friend to do one last float before he put his boat up for the season. The weather was due to turn cloudy and cool. We were looking for a blue-winged olive mayfly hatch to bring some fish o the top, and a day of fry fly fishing to top off our season. Before our schedules cleared, a midweek chance of rain prediction morphed into four inches of snow and a stretch of chilly – or downright cold – days to go with it. I used to be up for launching and loading a raft in tho...

  • Do I Drink Too Much?

    Alan Muskett, of the Pathfinder|Nov 2, 2023

Of course I don’t drink too much. That is purely a rhetorical title, because I am not a drinker. Being without sin, as the Bible says, I can cast stones at you, reader, as likely you do drink too much. Alcohol consumption has been much in the news lately, as recommendations as to what is a safe and appropriate are changing. Again. It seemed for quite a while that moderate consumption of alcohol, i.e. the red wine is good for your heart narrative, was the conventional wisdom. Now, both the World Health Organization (WHO) and the National I...

  • Hilarious 'I Ride' mix-up

Claire Muller, Seeley Lake Community Foundation Executive Director|Nov 2, 2023

You know that kind of frustration that happens when something is just not going according to your plan, and then you get a new piece of information that radically alters the situation? It completely diffuses the tension. 'Oh, it was all a misunderstanding?' you realize. 'That's fine!' Well, we've had a few of those situations over the years. Sometimes - hopefully - it's a hilarious mix-up. Here's one of my favorites. (Names changed for anonymity). Enjoy: Veronica, a regular rider who has...
