Blackhawks Make Their Marks at State Class C Track Meet

GREAT FALLS - The Seeley-Swan Blackhawks took the top spot on the podium in three individual events and two relays at the Montana State C Track Meet May 26 where they competed against athletes from more than 80 schools. The Boys' team came away with a third place trophy while the Ladies came in ninth.

Logan Maughan was the Boys top individual athlete. He earned first place in the 1600-meter setting a new personal record (PR) of 4:31.61 minutes. He also took second in the 800-meter with a time of 158.64 minutes, another PR.

The Boys other individual point earners were Hunter Shelmerdine with a fourth place in the 400-meter and Logan Robinson took fifth in the 200-meter.

For the Girls, Terra Bertsch and Klaire Kovatch were the State Champions in the pole vault and discus respectively. Bertsch set a new PR clearing 9 feet 6 inches while Kovatch threw to a new PR of 135 feet 3 inches. Kovatch's throw also extended her school record by nearly 5 feet.

Lily Mercer earned the Girls' only points on the track with a sixth place in the 400-meter.

The Boys relay teams proved they were the top in the state taking first place in both the 4x100 and the 4x400.

The 4x100 team of Robinson, Shelmerdine, Cameron Haines and Dakota Wood burned up the track with a smoking fast time of 43.93 seconds in the preliminaries, setting a new school record. They were slightly slower in the final with a time of 44.24 seconds but still earned first place.

The Boys 4x400 team of Robinson, Wood, Shelmerdine and Maughan was equally impressive as they blew away the competition with a time of 3:29.92 minutes.

The Girls 4x400 relay team of Kovatch, Mercer, Lulu Bohlman and Bethany Hoag took fifth with a time of 4:21.81. Mercer, Bohlman, Aspen Conley and Madison Hinchey made up the 4x100 girls team. They made the cut in the prelims in fifth place with a time of 52.53 seconds, their fastest of the season. They didn't have as clean of a race in the final and finished in eighth place with a time of 54.25 seconds.

Logan Maughan: 400m, 12th, 53.17; 800m, 2nd, 1:58.64, PR; 1600m, 1st, 4:31.61

Nate Samuli: Javelin, 8th, 163-10, PR.

Caleb Maughan: High Jump, NH.

Lily Mercer: 400m, 6th, 1:00.61.

Klaire Kovatch: 300m Hurdles, 9th, 49.60; Discus, 1st, 135-03, PR & School Record.

Terra Bertsch: High Jump, 5th, 5-02; Pole Vault, 1st, 9-06, PR.

Ashley Miller: Triple Jump, 10th, 32-00.
