Floodwaters Raise Sewer Questions

Floodwaters in three of the four sub-districts of the Seeley Lake Sewer District should give present and future Board members pause. Those areas should probably never be built on because they are wetlands and the homes already in those areas should get special sewage treatment attention.

Sewering those areas will encourage growth and at present the Seeley Lake Water District is at capacity. It will not be able to supply the new development with water unless it makes considerable, expensive new capital investment. If new owners want water they will have to drill wells which are often contaminated by high ground water during the spring runoff season.

AND, many of the homes directly downflow from the treatment plant site up by the airport presently have water in their basements because of the high groundwater.

Also, many of their wells are contaminated. What will the millions of gallons of “treated” sewage discharge water do to them? No one seems to have addressed that issue.

So, given the murky financial uncertainty about the high costs of this proposed sewer system we also have some serious environmental issues that have not been addressed.

Hats off to the new (and present) sewer board members if they address and answer these questions.
