Projected Sewer Rates Raise Questions

SEELEY LAKE - At this time it looks like sewer rates in the downtown Seeley area will be around $80 a month...that will be just about the highest monthly sewer rate in the state. Landlords will have no recourse but to pass that cost on to their renters. That’s on top of one of the highest water rates in the state. There are easily 100 rental properties in sub-district one, if you count business and residential alike.

My questions to sewer supporters, how does that help affordable housing? How will your (service) employee be able to afford to live in Seeley Lake? How does it help the majority of low and middle - income residents in Seeley Lake?

I predict landlords will see an exodus to less-costly rentals outside the sewer district and help will get harder to find. And the retired folks who have worked and lived all their lives and own their homes? They’re stuck...I already know one retired couple who threw up their hands and quietly moved to the Bitterroot after living more than 50 years in Seeley.

We can do better, folks.
