Sewer: A Newcomer's Perspective

SEELEY LAKE - As relative newcomers to the Seeley Lake community, please allow us to provide our perspective on the municipal sewer issue. Three years ago we purchased a seasonal (summer) cabin on Boy Scout Road. Our time here during the summers and occasional winter snowmobile trips convince us that we want to build a year-round home on our property.

Discussions with builders and Missoula County officials have shown that we may need to upgrade our existing septic system. This additional expense may be necessary because we are slated for Phase 3 of the proposed system. OK, we know we will have to spend these additional funds to get started on our construction. This is a tough pill to swallow but we will do it.

My wife Carol and I have noticed there doesn’t seem to be any obvious new or remodeling construction along the Highway 83 corridor through town. Do you suppose other members of our community are also hesitant about the additional expense of septic system installation or expansion? We believe there are many other folks holding out until the municipal sewer gets approved. Until then there will be no or little revitalization or renewal building efforts.

Years ago we grew up on different lakes in central Minnesota, each of which faced this same municipal sewer question. We remember the dissent voiced by the vocal, and thankfully minority, community members. These lakes and surrounding areas eventually had the sewers installed and today are much cleaner, have less weed growth and improved clarity.

We are very confident that the Seeley Lake community needs this municipal sewer system so we can ensure many future years of our families’ enjoyment of the lake and surrounding area. Therefore, we support the sewer project and ask you to also.
