Don't Forget To Protect the Water

August 31, 2017

SEELEY LAKE - As the fires and smoke continue to cause worry and stress for so many of us who live in and care about Seeley Lake, it also seems important to not forget the importance of protecting the water in our lives.

My parents bought a small cabin on the lake in 1964 and we began our trips back and forth from Great Falls, enjoying the activities of the lake and the people of the community. I admit that there are times when I miss the small, quiet area that I experienced for many years. However, as is the course of life, change happens.

The growth and development of Seeley over the years have brought more people, activities and events to enjoy. As a result, how we safeguard the water that invites recreation, thereby supporting business, must also change.

There seems to be credible evidence that the increased use and enjoyment of the lake have caused a degradation of its quality and health. And it seems that more than just the lake is being affected. It is my understanding that the groundwater itself, in addition to area rivers and streams, are also showing signs of contamination. These developments suggest that a necessary component of remedy is a sewer system. Especially for those of us accustomed to a personal septic system, the cost of this endeavor is not something to be taken lightly.

However, the grant monies that could be available would certainly allow for a significant decrease in the cost of this proposition and greater affordability for us all. I believe it is important to take full advantage of that grant.

I am hoping that the people of this community will support this major project as a means of helping to protect the waterways of the area and the health of the people who live, work and play here.
