Blackhawks Hit the Track Running

FRENCHTOWN - The Seeley-Swan Blackhawks' track season began March 30 at the Jim Johnson Invitational in Frenchtown. Nineteen A, B and C class teams competed.

The Lady Blackhawks took sixth place with 34 team points while the Boys earned 20 team points for ninth place.

Freshman Terra Bertsch led the Lady Blackhawks, placing in three events. She took second in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 18.04. Bertsch earned a fourth place with a 4'8" high jump and she anchored the Lady Blackhawks 4x100 relay for a third place finish.

The Lady Blackhawks 4x400 relay took fourth. Names were not available.

Also scoring for the Ladies, Cera Strumpfer cleared 8'6" for second place in the pole vault. Ashley Miller earned a fifth place in the triple jump while Chloe Robbins took fifth in the javelin.

Hunter Shelmerdine and Logan Maughan led the Boys, each placing in two individual events. Shelmerdine took fourth in the 400-meter and fifth in the triple jump while Maughan took fourth in the 800 and sixth in the 1600-meter.

The Boys 4x400 relay team took third and the 4x100 relay team came in just a half second short of placing in the top six.

The Blackhawks then headed to Corvallis April 1 for the Gene Hughes Invitational. Seven A schools, one B school and six C schools competed at the event.

The Lady Blackhawks earned 60 team points and took third behind Corvallis and Dillon. The Boys took tenth with 12 team points.

Alex Bohlman placed in three individual events. She took first in the javelin with a 128'6" throw, second in the 200-meter race and third in the high jump.

Cera Strumpfer repeated her 8'6" vault from earlier in the week to earn first place in Corvallis.

Terra Bertsch ran to a second place in the 100-meter hurdles while Ashley Miller crossed the line less than a half second behind Bertsch for third.

The Boys had a harder time breaking into the top six. Logan Maughan took second in the 800 and fifth in the 3200-meter. The Blackhawks 4x400 relay team took fifth.

The next meet is the Darby/Florence Invitational in Corvallis April 6. The Blackhawks then head to the Frenchtown Invitational April 8.
