Race to the Sky This Weekend

LINCOLN - Race to the Sky, Montana’s premier sled dog race runs Feb. 10-14. After several years of low snow pack on the race trail, officials are battling very deep snow and tough trail conditions, the trail crew reported today.

There are teams from Alaska, Montana, Washington, Utah, Idaho, Oregon and British Columbia, Canada entered in the race thus far. Sixteen teams have registered. Race to the Sky starts Feb. 10 with the 300 mile vet check at Y.M.C.A. in Helena at 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. followed by 5:30 p.m. with the Camp Rimini Commemorative Run, at the bottom of McDonald Pass on Rimini Road.

Saturday, Feb. 11, will be the 100 mile vet check from 11:30-1:00 p.m. at Hi-Country Snack Foods near Lincoln. The 300 mile teams will start at 2 p.m. followed by the 100 mile teams under the finish archway at Hi-Country.

Teams will travel to the White Tail Guest Ranch near Ovando and after a short lay-over, teams will travel to Seeley Lake/Morrell Creek Trailhead for the 100 mile finish and the Seeley Lake Community Center for rest at Seeley Lake checkpoint. The 100 mile awards ceremony will take place on Sunday afternoon at the Community Center. The public is invited.

The finish of the 300 mile race is expected to begin early evening Monday night, Feb. 13 and continue until midday Tuesday at Hi-Country Snack Foods.
