God's Goodness

We are on the other side of another Christmas season. Many are working on thank-you notes to extend appreciation for gifts received. For most, the desire to give a gift to another person is an expression of love and kindness. We desire to show goodness and thoughtfulness to others.

An attribute of God is His Goodness, which is wrapped up in God’s character. God’s goodness is His understanding of what is in our best interest and God’s loving desire to provide what is good for us.

God’s understanding of what is good for us is not the same as what we may define. In fact, our definition of what is good for our lives is often way off the mark. God is the source of all goodness in the world. It makes the most sense to look to the Lord to understand what the true measure of goodness is.

The writer of Psalm 25:8 tells us, “The LORD is good and does what is right; He shows the proper path to those who go astray. (NLT)” The Lord Himself is the perfect standard of goodness.

Because God is the perfect gift giver, we can trust fully in God’s goodness and trust that God knows what is best for our lives. We ourselves want what is best and good for our own lives. We do not want what is bad or harmful, we desire goodness in our lives and expect goodness in others.

Looking to God as the perfect source of goodness allows us to rest in what is best for our lives. Giving presents is an expression of kindness because we care for others and we look for what is useful and helpful in a gift for another person. In the same way, God’s attribute of goodness illustrates the Lord’s desire to provide for us what is truly best for our lives.

Psalm 25 tells us that God’s goodness shows us the right path in life. God is the source of goodness and our example of what is true, good and right.
