Are Your Truly Thankful?

Its turkey time again! If you are like most people a big meal with family or friends is the big cause for celebration on this national holiday. With a full stomach we settle on the couch to watch a football game or two and hopefully stay awake the whole time.

But are we missing the point of the day of celebration? Probably so. Reflecting on the original words of the 1863 Proclamation issued by Abraham Lincoln we read: “It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and one voice by the whole American people. I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens.”

The entire text is much too long for this article. I encourage everyone to Google the words “Thanksgiving Proclamation” to see exactly what this day is meant to be.

It’s certainly OK to have a big meal with friends and family…there is nothing wrong with tradition. HOWEVER, to fulfill the purpose of Thanksgiving, we must thank and praise our Heavenly Father for the many blessings that He has bestowed on us even though everything in our lives may not be perfect. (Perfect lives are rare.)

And don’t forget to thank God for the miracle of life that we all enjoy. We are not the result of some pond slime that, by chance, turned into one cell and eventually to a human. We were created by God, in His likeness, with a body and soul beyond compare with each of us uniquely formed in our mother’s womb.

James Perloff in his book “Tornado in a Junkyard” quotes a scientist named Morowitz, “The chances for producing the necessary molecules, amino acids, proteins, et cetera, for a cell one tenth the size of the smallest molecule known to man (Mycoplasm hominis H. 39) is less than one in 10 to the 340,000,000 power or 10 with 340 million zeros after it.” Anything with odds greater than 1 in 10 to the 50th power is considered effectively impossible.

Let’s face it! We are a complicated organism that should praise our Creator daily but especially on Thanksgiving Day.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
