Seeley Lake Sewer, Not the Best Solution with Best Probability of Success

SEELEY LAKE - The intentions of the Seeley Lake Sewer Board have been clear from its beginnings by the name it adopted, rather than calling itself the Seeley Lake Water Improvement Board. Now it continues to use our tax dollars to further its goal of imposing a sewer system in Seeley Lake despite the fact that there will be a vote next month whether or not to build such a system here.

I was one of those people who thought that septic systems were just a temporary solution until a “real” system could be put in. I was shocked to learn that more than 21 million households are NOT connected to public sewer and its not just small towns either. In fact, according to the circleofblue.org more than one million people use septic systems on Long Island, NY, one of the densest concentrations of septic in the country.

Yes, I want to improve the quality of water in Seeley Lake but I want the best possible solution with the greatest possibility of success … but with the least negative impact financially or on our environment. Imposing a sewer system has me very worried, not only for the cost but also for the potential for failure.

I applaud those community-spirited people who are working on the “Board” but I urge you to suspend all activity until after the vote. I am hoping that our community will vote down the sewer system. After that, I think it is time to rename it the Water Improvement Board and refocus on how to structure a system that will ensure that our individual septic systems are well maintained and effective.
