No Surprises for God

There have always been times throughout history when people have been apprehensive about the future of the nation and world. We are quickly approaching the next presidential election. This is a season of giving great consideration to who to vote for to be the next president.

At times like this I am reminded, or must be reminded, that God is not only in control of my life but also within rulers and authorities. God has divine control over everything that happens in the world…we understand this as His sovereignty.

In life filled with uncertainty, God’s sovereignty is something we can rest in. There is no such thing as fate or chance within our lives and throughout the course of history. We can find comfort and peace knowing that nothing takes place around us apart from God’s control.

This does not mean, however, that circumstances around us happen the way we want them to. Along with uncertainties we will face in life, we will also face difficulties and tragedies. But it is a comfort that we have a loving and gracious God who is directing all events according to His own purposes.

In the Bible, the people of Israel faced exile away from their land because of disobedience against God. The book of Daniel records the people of Israel in exile in the faraway Babylon. God’s people lived in daily uncertainty for their future and for their safety.

In Daniel chapter 4 we read about King Nebuchadnezzar, a Babylonian king who was full of pride and did not recognize that even his authority came from God. The king would be punished until he understood his place before the One True God.

We see in verse 32, “You will be driven away from people and will live with the wild animals; you will eat grass like cattle. Seven times will pass by for you until you acknowledge that the Most High is sovereign over the kingdoms of men and gives them to anyone he wishes.” (NIV)

Babylon was a powerful nation but still under the control and sovereignty of God. All rulers and anyone in authority are servants of God. This is a firm reminder, and a comforting reminder, that nothing in our nation and world is outside of God powerful and loving control.
