Please respect the Stars and Stripes

On Tuesday, June 28 there was an article in the Missoulian newspaper about the memorial service for David Thatcher. Mr. Thatcher was one of the famed Doolittle Raiders and was a hero in every sense of the word, helping to save four of his fellow crew members after their plane crashed. Gov. Steve Bullock attended the June 27 service and ordered flags in Montana be flown at half-staff. That’s pretty straightforward.

Tuesday I had occasion to run some errands downtown and was saddened to see no less than seven different flags at full staff. These were open business establishments, including one federal office.

People just like Mr. Thatcher put their lives on the line to insure that this country remains free and strong. The Stars and Stripes is a symbol of that strength and freedom and it deserves the respect of everyone who lives within the US boundaries.

If you are not sure what proper flag etiquette is, there are a number of good web sites you can visit. Thank you.

P.S. Remember, if you are displaying a flag at night, it should be properly illuminated.
