Mondul's Photo Chosen for 2016-2017 Lions Club Phone Directory

SEELEY LAKE - Seeley Lake resident Ann Mondul’s photograph of bear grass was chosen for the front cover of the 2016-2017 Seeley Lake Lions Club phone book. This is the second time Mondul has submitted her photography for the cover but the first time she has been chosen. A total of 35 entries were submitted for this year’s cover photo.

Mondul took her winning photograph while on an ATV ride on the road to Morrell Falls with some friends in July 2014.

“The sky was such a pretty blue, the bear grass was blooming with the snowcapped mountain in the background,” said Mondul. “When I’m touched and moved, I just have to capture [the image].”

Mondul took the photo with her Nikon D8 using manual settings. She prefers manual settings because it allows her to control the outcome. While she does edit photos with her Windows photo editing software, she said this photograph needed very little edits prior to submitting it.

Mondul chose to submit this photograph because she loved the colors and composition of the photograph. It also met the specific requirements for the contest being a vertical shot with space on the top for the text.

“It was a real honor to be selected,” said Mondul.

Mondul has enjoyed dabbling in photography for the past 20 years. While she has never considered herself a professional photographer or tried to sell her work, she has had her photos printed in the Rural Montana magazine, had them used by KPAX news station and one is used on the homepage for Blackfoot Electric.

“Living in the area, I’m never without material to photograph,” said Mondul who enjoys shooting landscapes and wildlife the most but also likes taking photos of people. “Lighting is so important. In the early morning and as the sun sets we get very pretty shades of gold and greens to shoot in.”

Lion Gary Lewis was the chair of the committee for selecting the photo for the front cover. He was very pleased with the number of photos submitted. Four paintings were even included this year in the contest.

Lewis said he presented the entries to several groups of community members, friends and co-workers outside of the Lions Club. He asked them to pick their top three choices. “There were two photos that were always in the top grouping [including Mondul’s],” said Lewis. The second photo selected included a lake. A photograph across Seeley Lake was chosen for the 2014-2015 directory.

Between the two, Lewis said Mondul’s was chosen because it was, “Awesome. This one was something new and had the bear grass.”

The 2016-2017 Seeley Lake Lions Club Directory will be mailed to Seeley Lake, Condon, Potomac and Ovando residents in the next couple of weeks. Additional copies will also be available at the Seeley Lake Area Chamber of Commerce in the Seeley Lake Historical Museum and Visitor Center or from any Seeley Lake Lion. The directory can also be viewed online at http://www.seeleylionsdirectory.com
