Seeley Lake Nordic Ski Trails Restrictions

SEELEY LAKE – According to the Seeley Lake Ranger District (SLRD) recreation staff the rule banning dogs on the Seeley Lake Nordic Ski Trails is a US Forest Service policy. The policy states prohibited acts at the Seeley Creek Ski trails include possessing a dog or use of wheeled vehicles, including bicycles, during the winter ski-grooming period, Dec. 1 through March 31 annually.

There are several reasons for restricting dogs on the ski trails highlighted by the SLRD staff:

1. There is an inherent safety issue. Skiers can be traveling in excess of 20 mph and could collide with dogs on the course, or collide with trees or other objects while trying to avoid collision with a dog.

2. Dogs damage the track. This is the primary reason. There is an enormous amount of time, effort and money that goes into grooming Nordic ski trails. Dogs do significant damage to the track set by the groomer and compromise the experience for skiers.

3. Dogs defecate on the course and skiers don’t want to ski over it.

“The Nordic system is by definition a specialized trail system designed for a very specific activity. We issue and enforce rules that allow us to manage for the best experience possible specifically for Nordic skier on those trails,” wrote Developed Recreation Specialist Chad Mullman in an email to the Pathfinder. “The Forest Service has very few restrictions on where dogs are allowed but they do exist in areas where they improve the experience for the user.”

SLRD District Ranger Rachel Feigley does not anticipate changes to this policy in the near future.
