Historical Society Seeking Winter Recreation Items

SEELEY LAKE - The Seeley Lake Historic Museum has completed 15 years of displaying items that have provided many memories for local residents, interesting thoughts for visitors and glimpses into the past for our youth.

The museum is housed in the old barn built about 85 years ago on the then newly established Double Arrow Ranch. The dream was to build it into a combination horse and dude ranch.

During its early years it was used as a horse barn for the dude ranch housing, fine horses for fine horsemen. After the Great Depression, the dude ranch fell onto hard times and was finally auctioned off.

During the 1940s, the barn reverted into a "normal" ranch barn housing beef and milk cows, until C.B. and Helen Rich purchased the ranch in 1958 and used the barn as the core of their outfitting and guide services until they moved their operation to Kozy Korner more than 20 years ago.

The barn had been unused for a few years until the 100-year snow of 1996-7 collapsed it. The four walls of the log structure, flooring and stall materials were salvaged, moved to the present location and reconstructed. The roof and upper floor were newly built to original configuration and dimensions.

Since then, each of the horse stalls has had a variety of museum displays with a particular theme; e.g., fire, logging, local characters, outfitting, pioneers, etc.

The next theme scheduled for a museum display is "Old Time Winter Recreation." Any items used to while away the winter leisure hours will be included. Outdoor items such as sleds, skis, snowshoes, snowmobiles, ice skates and ice fishing equipment will be displayed. Indoor winter pastimes, such as old board and card games, also will be included.

A successful and interesting display will depend on residents providing most of the items. The items can either be donated or loaned to the Seeley Lake Historical Society (SLHS) by the end of December.

Anyone willing to offer winter recreation items can drop them off at NAPA or Rent-All. Otherwise leave a message at 677-2990 or email slhistory@blackfoot.net for one of the SLHS directors to pick them up.
