  • Appreciation They Deserve

    Andi Bourne, Pathfinder|Jul 21, 2016

SWAN VALLEY – Quick Response Unit (QRU) volunteers and volunteer firefighters give of their time, energy and often sacrifice financially to serve the communities in which they work and live. They often do this with little or no recognition. Swan Valley resident Grace Siloti wants to see that changed. Siloti, Marcia Tapp and Helene Michael are throwing a Community Celebration to honor volunteer QRU and firefighters. The event is an opportunity to thank the volunteers and will include a potluck and live music. The whole community and s...

  • Finding the Other Side

    Nathan Bourne, Pathfinder|Jul 21, 2016

One of the hardest parts of our job at the Pathfinder is finding the other side of stories. Even harder is finding someone willing to go on the record with the other side, especially if it seems to go against the grain. Being in a small town makes it even more difficult. This week Curtis Friede was willing to stick his neck out a bit and go on the record so we could present the other side of the Bob Marshall Music Festival. Friede is not alone in his opinions and concerns. I’ve heard these issues and others in conversations with people who w...

  • Bob Marshall Music Festival Creates Division

    Andi Bourne, Pathfinder|Jul 21, 2016

SEELEY LAKE – While organizers and many people in the community were excited about the Bob Marshall Music Festival, others raised issues that they felt need to be addressed and clarified. Seeley Lake resident and business owner Curtis Friede not only took personal issue with the festival being held in the middle of town, he also sees the event dividing the community in several ways. Friede lives on the top of the hill to the east of the Seeley Lake Elementary school where the three-day festival was held. He said that for anyone who lived on t...

    Nathan Bourne, Pathfinder|Jul 21, 2016

SEELEY LAKE - A major concern expressed from community members about the Bob Marshall Music Festival was serving alcohol near Seeley Lake Elementary (SLE) school and its property. The area where the alcohol was served is legally owned by SLE but is designated as a Missoula County Park. SLE administers the park and can approve or disapprove activities without the Missoula County Parks and Recreation Department input. The festival was approved for a special permit form the Montana Department of Revenue allowing temporary beer and wine sales and c...

    Kathy Davis, Seeley Lake, Mont.|Jul 21, 2016

President Barack Hussein Obama is arguably the most maligned president in U.S. history, thanks to the U.S. Congress, the NRA and special interest groups that are opposed to his policies. President Obama has survived the most vile accusations with dignity and honor. We should all have such grace....

  • Farewell Summer

Hannah Ayers, Seeley Lake Elementary Seventh Grader|Jul 21, 2016

The sun glistens on the trees Through the brightly colored autumn leaves Shadows cast on the ground All near the ground squirrels' mound The birds' songs grow weak As the autumn mornings become more bleak Traces that summer was here Have yet to disappear But everyone knows fall is near The animals and plants leave or die And all that can be said is Goodbye It may be sad but not everyone can hibernate in a den But we all know that summer will be back again...

  • Our Ever-Present Psychological Influences

    Ken Silvestro PhD.|Jul 21, 2016

At this point, it might be obvious that our psychologies are constantly involved in our lives. Every thought, emotion, creative expression, conversation, argument, relationship, loving gesture, physical action, value, belief and so on, follows from psychological influences. But why is this important? It’s important for an endless number of reasons. For example, many people are not aware, or aware enough, of these influences. If more people recognized their psychological influences, then more people would consider their expressions, gestures, re...

  • Stop and Appreciate the Songbirds

Bruce Auchly, Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Region 4|Jul 21, 2016

There is something about songbirds this time of year that can catch the ear, eye and heart of even the most preoccupied person. It doesn't matter where: mountain tops, middle of the prairie, downtown, uptown. It doesn't matter what you call them: tweety birds, little brown jobs, neotropical migrants. Songbirds are nesting, raising young and – at least the males – singing their blessed little hearts out. Sure a dedicated birder with keen hearing can tell the difference between the songs of a sav...

  • Discussing Montana at the Open Book Club

    Betty Vanderwielen, Pathfinder|Jul 21, 2016

SEELEY LAKE – The Open Book Club (OBC) held July 13 featured Russell Rowland's book "Fifty-Six Counties: A Montana Journey." Three things were unusual about the event. First, it was a summer event held at Holland Lake Lodge rather than one of the fall-through-summer readings OBC traditionally holds at Grizzly Claw Trading Company. Second, published writer, Sheila Scobba Banning, functioned as a moderator, alternately interviewing Rowland, prompting him to read selections from his book and s...
