  • Customers vote with their wallets

    Doug Anderson, Seeley Lake, Mont.|Nov 15, 2018

SEELEY LAKE - I am so glad that the main street businesses in Seeley Lake are booming. Profits are so high that business owners can afford to alienate huge percentages of their customers by endorsing one political candidate over another and supporting controversial ballot initiatives with signs at the entrances, parking lots and even at the cash register. Why, business is so good, that petitions calling for the removal of specific public employees, for acts of God unrelated to their work, is totally acceptable. My management degree was only a m...

  • Bridges understands small communities

    Doug Anderson, Seeley Lake, Mont.|Sep 27, 2018

One name to remember when voting this fall is Lee Bridges, who is running for House District 92, which includes Condon, Seeley Lake, Greenough, Potomac, Bonner, East Missoula and surrounding areas. I first met Lee 25 years ago when I was a building inspector checking the electrical and heating system that Lee had installed in her shop. That’s right, she did all of the work herself, to a level of perfection and craftsmanship that I had rarely seen before or since. Actually, I was so amazed that a novice was so good at this trade, that I e...

  • Open space for future generations

Doug Anderson and Mary Miester, Seeley Lake, Mont.|Aug 30, 2018

There is an open space bond issue for Missoula County voters on the November ballet. What does this mean? Voters have the opportunity to continue a fund that was established over a decade ago for the use of preserving open spaces for agricultural uses, wildlife habitat, clean sources of water and habitat for native fish and plants. Even in rural communities like Seeley Lake, Condon and Potomac, important wildlife areas, rural lifestyles and family ranches are threatened by sprawl and development, and this fund has preserved that vital habitat....

  • Two truths and a solution for Larson

    Doug Anderson, Seeley Lake, Mont.|Aug 23, 2018

SEELEY LAKE - Being the local expert in all things related to water, in Don Larson’s mind there are two truths: A) The existing septic systems, at least on his properties, are functioning properly, and probably the cleanest on the planet. No need for sewer. B) The water bills in Seeley Lake are “exorbitant”. I am surprised that he hasn’t solved both these problems by connecting pipe “A” to pipe “B”....

  • Missoula County Building Permits and Inspections Needed for 61-Lot Subdivision

    Doug Anderson, Seeley Lake, Mont.|Apr 12, 2018

I have been following the purposed 61-unit Swan Mountain Estates subdivision in Powell County, just outside Seeley Lake. I have some concerns that I don’t believe are adequately addressed. While I don’t have any problem with the subdivision in principle, the fact that these developers want to rely on the Seeley Lake’s first responders for emergency situations has some troubling ramifications. Seeley Lake has terrific first responders. I personally know a number of people who work with or for the fire department, search and rescue, the sheri...

  • Support a Smart Future, Support the Sewer

    Doug Anderson, Seeley Lake, Mont.|Sep 28, 2017

SEELEY LAKE - I have watched the lively debate about the proposed Seeley Lake sewer system for some time now, with many thoughtfully constructed arguments on each side, as well as some wild rantings and conspiracy theories. Here’s some of the basic truths I was able to distill from all of this: There are a lot of septic systems in a very confined area, some operating properly and some failing. They may or may not be entirely responsible for ground water and lake contamination but it is certain that many of them are contributing to it. Adding m...
